FM reception depends upon having a good antenna matched to the radio. What type of radio are you using, and what are you using for an antenna?

How do I fix poor radio recption on a 2012 Grand Vitara Urban fitted with Garmin sat nav/digital radio.

Poor reception and low volume of any radio is mostly caused by poor aerial performance.

If the aerial has been eliminated, the unit is properly grounded, has a good current and voltage supply and the loudspeakers and wiring have all been tested and found to be ok then the fault must be inside the radio.

In lots of parts of the world the ambient temperatures in the height of summer and the depths of winter can be outside the operating temperature range of the radio. It is not wise to switch on when these conditions exist as delicate electronics are easily damaged, especially when condensation might have formed on internal circuit boards.
My father once switched on his car radio after the car had been parked in the sun and something inside failed instantly. The repair guy said it was a common problem.

One further thought. Is the alternator overcharging; producing an excessive voltage that could damage the radio or alternatively is a loose supply or ground connection causing a strong surge current and inducing an excessive voltage in a nearby inductance...

sounds like your in good shape if its a 12-14v output.. the things about people blowing up radios is they use 10-30amp fuses and hook them up backwards.. + to ground and ie... make sure to use a 2 - 5 amp fuse for a normal cb.. and go + to + and - to -...

It is always worth checking the aerial in any case of poor reception.

In the case of a standard mast-type aerial it is necessary for the mast to have very good continuity to the centre of the aerial plug, that the outer part of the aerial plug has good continuity to the aerial ground and thus to the vehicle bodywork and the two parts are electrically isolated from each other. A good independent radio ground connection also helps.

In the case of miniature aerials or those within a windscreen, a rear screen or rear quarter glass, the amount of signal available will be small and so an aerial preamplifier will be provided to boost the signal. The preamp might be part of the aerial or a separate unit fitted anywhere convenient. I once found one fixed to the front firewall behind the dashboard.
The preamp needs a good 12 volt supply and a ground as well as good connections to the aerial coaxial leads. The supply is usually obtained from the radio set so it is operative only when the radio is switched on. Sometimes a radio has a dedicated output but mostly the electric (automatic) aerial output must be used. If the preamp isn't working reception will typically be limited to a few powerful stations.

I hope this helps.

Pioneer Avic D3 has poor fm reception when the car is on. It works fine when the car is off. Any ideas?

Your power antenna wire maybe hooked up to ignition. So when you turn off the car no more voltage is going to your antenna wire so your power antenna goes down causing a poor reception. You must hook up the blue wire on the radio harness to the power antenna wire.

Purchase a one wire (12 volt) alternator, and install it,and it uses one wire only, the out put wire to the battery from the back of the alternator. Then replace all lamps, and bulbs with 12 volt replacements.Disconnect the voltage regulator completely. The radio,if original, will need a voltage reducer, purchase a coil resister to put in line on the positive input to the radio. This coil resister will reduce the voltage to 7 volts, witch will be fine. The starter will work fine, leave it alone. All dash lights will have to be changed also,to 12 volt bulbs. You can find these replacement parts at any N A P A auto parts store. The resister is a part number irc 13,and the alternator will end in a sw,this means single wire.

Can I connect a modem thomson 585v6 to a source of 48 volts

48Volts seems to high for a modem device. Most devices run under 12 Volts. Just look at the rear part of your modem and look for the label that indicates its voltage rating

I currently have a MK4 VW golf and I cant get any reception on AM channels on my radio! When we first got the car we had no problems! Any ideas?

Good Day,

This may sound strange but has any aftermarket parts been put on the car since? If you have put on a fiberglass body kit and or fiberglass doors, this will cut down am reception. Another possibilty is if a high output ignition was installed this too would reduce reception. Was the head unit replaced?

Let me know what has or hasn't been done to the car since you bought it and we can run down the possibility.

Good Luck
Hope this helps
