I have a Honda whipper snipper that needs a bearing that attaches to the clutch /drum assembly.i removed the large circlip at the end of the clutch housing but can`t progress any further, any ideas?john

The bearing you want will be in the end of the shaft housing under the clutch drum. You will need to pull the clutch drum out of the housing so remove the head of the snipper to ensure that there are no retainers on the end of the shaft. Check if there are 2 holes in the housing under the drum . insert a punch and tap the clutch drum and drive shaft out of the bearing. If there are no holes there then there may be holes in the back of the clutch drum in which you will inset the legs of a slide hammer puller and hammer it out of the bearing

How do I remove the clutch

Remove the power unit, remove the plastic clutch/ starter cover, install a piston stop, with a t25 torx driver inserted down the center tube on the clutch drum remove the clutch drum, then using the proper clutch tool remove the clutch paying attention to the arrow stamped on the clutch- usually left handed thread. be sure not to lose small washer between clutch and drum.

Clutch removal tool?

not recommended, if you use a impact the end of the crank and bolts and nuts are small you can snap off the bolt or worse snap the crank end
also many drums are held on with a snap ring and then the clutch can
be held in place with a both or nut on the end and there may be set screws on some models as well
as in most saws the drum and sprockets are what wear first, normally you can just replace the drum and sockets before you have to replace the entire clutch assembly, so if you have never replaced the drum or sprokets before once you remove the drum if the clutch spring is not broke, just replace the drum and sprocket will save you a bunch of money

How do you change the clutch?

Remove the side casing. (bar side)
Take off bar and chain.
Remove E-clip holding the clutch drum on.
Remove clutch drum and needle cage bearing.
This should expose the clutch.
Remove spark plug.
Use a piston stop to stop the piston rising, Sometimes a knotted piece of pull cord fed into the cylinder is just as good.
Turn the clutch clockwise with a socket to unscrew.

To put clutch back on turn anticlockwise till piston cycles back and hits the piston stop again and tighten. Replace spark plug and clutch drum, bearing, bar and chain and side casing.

How do you disassemble the small drive gear on the PE550?

The small gear (part # 530071258) is attached to the clutch drum with a right-hand threaded cap screw (remove counter clockwise with an Allen wrench). It is secured with Locktite. To keep the clutch drum from turning while you remove the cap screw you must remove the transmission case from the edger (three long screws that are very hard to see and accessed from the blade side). The clutch drum has four holes in it -- you will use one of them to hold the drum from turning. Insert a 3/16 to 1/4 in drill thru one of the holes and drill a hole in the plastic transmission case, but not into the grease chamber. To keep the drum from turning, pass a screw driver or other round tool thru the hole in the drum and thru the hole in the case. Use the screw driver as a lever to keep the drum from turning and back out the cap screw counter clockwise. If the drum clutch becomes out of round you will have to replace it (part # 530036665).

How do you remove the clutch drum assembly for model #316.791890

Your clutch drum is held on with a Torx head screw which is screwed into the end of the crankshaft. To lock the engine up so crank won't turn, remove the spark plug, rotate the engine so the piston is down and put some clean pull rope or otherwise soft material in cylinder. ...make sure it is something that won't hang up in the ports on the sides. Then when you rotate the crank, it will compress the rope or soft material, locking up the engine to facilitate removal of the Torx screw, The screw will come loose but will probably not come all the way out...that's just the way they made it.

How to remove clutch?

You have to pull the spark plug and fill the cylinder with some small rope then using a big pair of locking pliers you can loosen the clutch. There should be markings on the clutch as to the direction to unloosen.

I need to replace the clutch drum assy. How do I remove the original?

Remove the chain and bar cover. Remove the chain and bar. Remove the nut on the drum (Air impact wrench is best for this if you do not have one use wrench and hammer to loosen the nut) Remove the drum you will then have to remove the clutch by striking with a brass rod and hammer.

Needle bearing maintenance

use a plastic piston stop and the proper clutch removal toop. Try Baileys on line or Madsens saw shop for the removal tool. Must order for the specific model, but they are rather cheap.
