Is a 500w power supply to much for my pc?

wattage is a measurement of power output. however wattage is not nececassrily a measure of continuous power output. wattage is a measurement of potential power output. this means on one hand if a pc is only idling the wattage of the power supply unit (psu) required to run the components might be very low. on the other hand if you have several power intensive applications running simultaneously with several different web browsers open featuring several active tabs open in each browser and you are also streaming video on the internet on one browser and downloading files while watching a movie all at the same time then the pc would probably be working near its maximum and would require near the maximum amount of available wattage from the psu. a certain amount of the psu's wattage is needed to power each of the key power consuming internal components - the cpu, the memory, the motherboard chipset and other motherboard devices, any expansion cards installed on the motherboard as well as the spinning of the hard drive, optical drive and cooling fans. the total wattage required to power all these and other internal components is an indications of the very bare total minimum power capacity that a pc will require. this means that generally the higher the wattage of the psu the more stable the overall performance of the computer islikely to be. the psu also consumes as well as delivers power due to the in-built cooling fans required to cool it by venting hot air from the back of the pc during operation. therefore as a general rule the higher the wattage of the psu, the greater the capacity of the psu to take the powering of all the internal components of the pc that require power (including the psu's own cooling fans) well within its stride.

so your friend was correct to draw your attention to the important issue of the optimisation of power consumption in a pc and ensuring that you have the correct wattage of psu to adequately and safely power the internal components of the pc. however your friend has slightly misunderstood how the psu works.

perhaps you could explain to this friend that a pc with an underpowered psu is far more likely to damage a pc's internal components than a pc with a psu of excessive wattage. In this way, both of you will have helped to enhance each other's knowledge and awareness of an important issue in the maintenance of a pc.

I am considering buying a used unit but need to know the amps requirement

Most dryers require a 220VAC 30 AMP circuit. Some of the exotic ones use up to 50 amps but not many domestic ones.

How to check if my power supply is already not ''at the limit''?

1 or 2 extra hdds and ram does not require much extra power and your coolmaster should do the job. But if you intend to use a newer graphic card you should check the requirenments for wattage at your new card manufacturer product specification webpage. I am pretty sure that almost all newer graphic cards require at least 500 watt to run without problem. My advise is to buy at least a 550 watt psu although i don't know what is your hardware. Try to post your hardware specs and calculate for each component (cpu wattage+graphics wattage +etc) your power supply need to be over 50 wattage. Hope that helped!

I use low wattage of transformer to my companion 5bose speaker now there is no sound what should i do.

Hi,

i suggest that you will stop using that low wattage transformer. Using that transformer might destroy your speaker. You should provide the right wattage which the speaker is requiring. Just look at the back of the speaker and you will the required wattage.
