My Kenmore freezer model # 970-257320 is no longer keeping food frozen. Suggestions?
There is a slight cool breeze inside, all sounds are normal. There is a small build up of hard ice along very back bottom that I'm working on removing. Any advice?
Re: My Kenmore freezer model # 970-257320 is no longer...
IF the unit is not self defrosting and there is ice, you may have ice blocking the evaporator coils. If the unit is self defrosting and is not completing a defrost cycle then the defrost timer is bad.

I believe that your refrigerator may need a new 12002495 or 1184282 Adaptive Defrost Control You can find it inside the fresh food section and behind the controls for temperature. Not sure about the buzzing sound yet but the moisture and thawing of the frozen food points to a defrost problem. Need you to unplug and have a look at the adaptive defrost control. Would not hurt to open the back panel in the rear of freezer and defrost if needed and need someone to check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Sea Breeze
That is a broken thermostat control part number 67003000 when they stop they can break while on or off. Sea Breeze PART NUMBER AND MODEL SEARCH FEATURE
Most likely your defrost timer is defective. Located inside the fresh food section and inside a metal box behind the control panel. Turn the timer slowly clockwise until compressor stops. Wait 30 minutes or until compressor restarts If the compressor does not restart turn again until it starts during this time the freezer should be in defrost and sounds of crackling or sizzling is normal. Let me know what you find. The part number for your defrost timer WR9X489 http://servicepartstec.blogspot.com/
I will assume until you can confirm the model number is near Sears KENMORE ELITE, Model No. 10650594000 But I will need you to double check because Sears always uses a number different than the MFG.
For the moment I need you to remove some things from the freezer and remove the back panel covering the evaporator coils. Look for the coils to be frozen over. If so it could be the adaptive defrost control found inside the fresh food compartment part number 4388932 Or a problem with defrost thermostat or the defrost element. I am here to help, Just let me know, Sea Breeze [email protected]
Please check the model number again, I can't locate that number. The number should be like for example 194.258978
Look at following areas for the model number
Beneath Or Inside Food Compartment On Cabinet Frame
On Plate Lower Front Or Rear Of Cabinet
Beside Compressor Door On Right End
Near Rear Of Cabinet
Inside Liner At Top
I think your refrigerator has a defrost timer and this may be the problem, Let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze
Thank You for having your model number ready, Could you remove the grate on front and bottom of refrigerator to expose the defrost timer. In the opening on front turn the timer slowly turn clockwise until you hear a click or change in operation of refrigerator. Let me know, Sea Breeze
This just happened to mine (slightly different model number) and what it boiled down to was the air channels that bring the air from the freezer were frozen solid. You can remove the inside back panel of the freezer and get the ice out which is a temporary fix because more than likely, the defrost timer is bad and needs to be replaced. (It's frozen up because it's not properly defrosting) With mine, you could determine if the defroster itself is working by manually toggling it on and off. You said that the compressor is working so while it is running, manually toggle the freezer light on and off 5 times within 6 seconds (this is how it's done on my model) and you should hear the fan cut off. Make sure the drain pan is empty prior to doing this. Leave it alone for about 1 hour and you should see water in the drain pan. Just remember, this is a temporary fix but should at least allow you to keep your drinks cool until someone can come out!
