Nancy,
More than likely you have a broken belt. If you try to spin the brush by hand with the vacuum unplugged and it spins freely, your belt is broken, or has come off the roller or motor shaft. If it will not turn freely or does not turn at all when you try by hand, you may need to replace both the belt and the brush. You can first look at both ends of the brush to see if there is a build up of hair or string etc. around the brush bearings. If there is clean that off and see if the bearings spin freely. Also, let us know what type of vacuum you have so that we can give you more detailed information that would help you better. Hope this helps!

Brushes will not move

Try to turn the brushes by hand. If they won't turn remove the brush assembly to see if it is seized, if it is, take it apart and clean the brushes and the gears. If it is nor seized the turbine might be seized.

The brushes do not disengage when in upright position

Set the brush control, as needed. The brush control turns the brushbar on the underside of the vacuum on and off. The button is located beside the power button, on the top-front of the vacuum cleaner. Turn on the brush control for cleaning carpet. Turn off the brush control for bare floors or delicatelb_icon1.png rugs..

The brushes stopped turning. I cleaned the filter

Can you rotate the brushes manually (grab some of the yellow bristles and rotate the brushes). If they are not jammed, then your air fan drive is clogged or broken. Air must pass through the fan to spin the brushes... so confirm air flow by powering the machine on and feeling for decent air flow. Clear any obstructions that my restrict air flow....

I have a 550 that will not **** it drives around and thinks its doing a great job but does not pick up any dirt does anyone know what the problem is or where I can get it fixed ?

Have you cleaned out the dirt compartment? This compartment is very small and fills fast ... Roomba does not have a vacuum in it ... it just sweeps so make sure the brushes are working and in good order ... to test the brushes hold it up and turn it on make sure your fingers are clear of wheels and moving brushes before turning it on. Visually inspect to see if brushes are turning also check for hair and string around wheels and brushes.
dont forget to rate me Thx :) and good luck

Brushes do not rotate

The brushes are turned by a turbine assembly, most likely the bearings have seized and will require replacement. not a job for the mechanicaly challanged, however this problem can be solved through a service shop

6 rotating brushes

When you turn on the Vac with the brush strip NOT installed does the part that engages the brush strip turn at all? If so, when you install the brush strip see if the will turn when no pressure is applied to the brushes (tilt the Vac back). If none of this works, then the switch that engages the brushes when the unit is not fully upright may be broken. If the part that engages the brushes turns but won't turn when the brush strip is engaged then one of the parts that mate up it most likely stripped. Let us know what you discover!

The brushes do not rotate

The brushs are driven by a turbine, if not turning, it may be bad. You can take it apart and try to clean it out, or just replace it. Also pull out the brush block and see if the shaft that goes up into the turbine is broken off, itis broke, then replace the brush block.

The plastic gears that drive the sweep brushes strip out easily on these. You can get the company to repair it for you but they make it a big hassle. I opted to buy the gear set on EBAY and replace them myself.
