Flash not automatic on bounce

My EF-500 just suddenly behaving erratically. It isn't stabile in any mode on my Canon XTi. No automatic mode, on bounce or straight ahead. Intermittent full manual dump when on auto and program. No rhyme or reason, just very erratic.

Re: Flash not automatic on bounce

I'm having the exact same problem. It's been working two seasons of wedding photography--300 flashes x 18 weddings each year. 10,800 flashes. It's getting worse and worse. I'm going to have to scrap the flash and get a new one. Is this "normal" wear. Should I expect to replace my flash every two years?

Running in TTL mode with Nikon D200, flash EF-500 DG ST NAd, doesn't work. In manual mode everything runs well.

this flash is not compatible with the d200. i had one and sent it back to sigma, they upgraded the software in the flash for free. now it works in all modes, it needs to be iTTL to work on the nikon d200 the NAd version is not iTTL.

Sigma ef-500 dg st won't work with my d300 or 200 in ttl mode

This Sigma flash is not Ittl compatible. The D300 and D200 Nikon must have Ittl compatible flash to operate in any of the Automatic modes. It is a great flash but will not work on those two cameras.

Hello there. It seems that the Sigma EF-500

John, there is a difference in sync times between film and digital flash. It's taken the third party manufactures a little time to catch up so there is a lot of "film" flash units out there. I'm understanding that the Sigma flash doesn't fire at all which is pretty amazing I would have thought it would fire just not at the correct time. This flash isn't a total loss because it can be used wireless with a slave unit for fill or even a main light triggered from a mini transmitter on the camera hot shoe. Here is a link to an e-Bay auction to see what I'm saying.

I use this type of system for a location shoot, there are no wires and I can set up and balance my lighting to each set with no more dark backgrounds hope this was a help

Manual for Sigma EF-500 DG Super

You can download the manual from
Just answer a few quick questions about its performance, value for money etc and the link to download the manual opens up. Just be careful, because there is also a manual for the Nikon version of the same flash and they are a little different.

Hope this helps.

Sigma EF-500-DG, does not charge and does not become ready

Thank you for using FixYa for your problem

Always check the batteries first - make sure they have full charge (in the wrong way can discharge them) but if is it still giving the same fault, your flash is faulty.
It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

I got a flash Metz SCA 331, and I use it with Canon EOS Rebel XTi. It works, but I am ''a manual person'' and would like to have the manual for the flash, to learn more and get best performance. I use two...

Metz SCA 331 is the adapter between the camera and the flash. You also need a manual for the flash itself. Google the flash brand, model and add manual to the search.

1. Sigma EF-500 DG ST 2. Quantaray 7500A

A: For Sigma issue:

The Sigma EF-500 flashes have very small chromed contacts for the batteries. Even though they may not look corroded, they may not power up or conduct enough power to fully cycle up. Use a polishing tip in a dremel or an ink eraser tip to clean the internal wire contacts and the flat contacts on the door. I use dielectric grease on a q-tip to apply a coat to all contacts and cleaned battery terminals to minimise future issues.
