Most times you have to press an hold the FN key at the lower left portion of the keyboard to get them to work. If you'll notice, the numbers on keys jkluio789 are in blue and so is the FN function key.

You state to hold the fn, and hit the power button.....OK, whats the ( fn ) key ?

The Fn key is a key found usually on the keyboards of portable computers (laptops, netbooks etc) and sometimes on desktop type keyboards.

It is a key usually marked with a blue coloured "Fn" and is located somewhere on the bottom left row of keys.

The Fn key is used in combination with other keys that have (usually) blue letters or icons on them to activate the special functions (Fn) on these keys.

For example, on the laptop I'm writing this on; If I press F5 the computer would perform the action my software has normally assigned to F5. If however I press the Fn button and F5, the computers internal function for decreasing screen brightness is invoked.

Different computer makes have different assignment to their keyboard Fn so you can't generally say press Fn+F5 to decrease screen brightness, it might be assigned to something else, volume or sleep-mode or even nothing. The "blue" text or icon will give an indication of what it will do.

Hope this helps explain the Fn key ;)

How to use keys

There is a BLUE-coloured 'FN' key on the bottom-left of the keyboard. Hold that key down, and then press one of the "blue" keys, to get the "alternate" meaning of that key.

How to turn off blue keys for an Compaq mini cq10??

Hi,

if you are refering to the blue letters or alphabets which are present on the keyboard. HP designs keyboard with a billingual layout in some Notebook models.

The HP "Blue" keys are indeed the "French" input keys or other language keys.

How to use the Blue Symbols or keys on a HP Notebook:

We can activate them by pressing Ctrl+fn+right Shift. To deactivate, press Ctrl+fn+right Shift twice, i.e. Ctrl+fn+right Shift then let go off Shift while still holding Ctrl and fn, then press Shift again.

When you press Ctrl+Fn+Right Shift it will switch to the the billigual layout. That means the blue characters become prioritie.

For example, if you are in the billingual layout, when you press shift+6 you will get a '?' but not the '^' sign.

Usually you have a key named Fn on the laptop keyboards.

The common combinations for alternate display are :

Fn+F5
Fn+F4

You can try both the combos. Need to press both the keys together.
