Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

1 Answer

B&s 24hp v-twin was hard to start and I adjusted the valves because it was hard to start

I put them at .04 lash, now it starts and runs great until I open it up at full throttle, then it is popping a lot. Any ideas?"

SOURCE: I have a Deere twin

Hi knobbe69
Time to "mess" with your carburetor...sounds like that is where the problem lies...
I will include my instructions on the carburetor rebuilding....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check to make sure you are getting fire/spark at the plug, if so then do the following:
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they will be located in the fuel tank.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.

SOURCE: why does my Briggs & stratton 24 hp intek v-twin **** and pop at full throttle causing black smoke out of the exhaust?

Does it do this when you start it or turn it off? If yes to either one you must install a gas chock in the fuel line. It's a valve. You turn the valve off and let the engine run out of gas. When starting you turn it on obviously. By draining the carburetor of gas it won't overload anymore and backfire when turned on/of f.

Adjusting valve on a briggs 446677 _e1.__24hp.harde starting

valve clearance should be .010 " inlet hot and .012 exhaust hot
that is .254mm and .304 mm
valve clearance has nothing to do with hard turning over of the engine
if it turns by hand then fix the starter motor , battery leads or battery
the biggest problem with B&S motors is the valve stems which from new tend to stretch reducing the valve clearance when hot thereby making hot starts difficult if not impossible until the motor cooled down

Check with a mechanic before running your engine - sounds like you are doing some damage and book you are using is incorrect.

I have 04 polaris magnum 330 it run great juste for iddle i dont push the throtle beacause de motor spark with fire in the carbs but on iddle motor run great ????? cdi or carbs

This could also be valve lash adjustment or bad intake valve ( burnt valves) this could also be dirty carbs. I don't think this would be an ignition problem. Clean out the carbs and check the valve lash on the intake and exhaust valves.

Well we tried adjusting the valves and then it will start and make a werid noise and then will be about to shut off and it doesnt sound right plezz can you help me? its a 1997 gmc 5.7 1500

With the Engine in the number 1 firing position, adjust the exhaust valves for cylinders number 1, 3, 4, and 8 and the intake valves for cylinders number 1, 2, 5, and 7.
Turn the valve rocker arm nut counter clockwise until the valve lash is felt in the valve pushrod.
Turn the rocker arm nut clockwise until all of the valve lash is removed (zero valve lash).
Zero valve lash can be felt by moving the valve pushrod up and down between your thumb and forefinger until there is no more up and down movement of the valve pushrod.
When all the valve lash is removed, then turn the valve rocker arm nut clockwise 1 additional turn (360 degrees).

With the engine in the number 6 firing position, adjust the exhaust valves for cylinders number 2, 5, 6, and 7 and the intake valves for cylinders number 3, 4, 6, and 8.

Follow the same steps as above.

Hard start cold

You will have to check the float level of the carburator, try too, to blow out with compressed air the primary jet.
You will also have to reset the air-mixture screw and its better to have it a little on the rich side.
Also check the spark plug gap.
Hope this helps!

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
