When I install this stem it turns and turns. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like you didn't get the valve in properly. Is the newer required type? (Single stem) ,or is the older brass type? When you install the single type, they have a tab to keep the valve handle from spinning. Also, the valve can make the hot water either left or right depending on whether the valve is turned up or turned down before you install the handle.

I installed a new 17 series single handle with temperature control unit several monthsa ago during a complete shower rebuild. No that I am ready to fire up the water, I can't get the water from from...

Remove handle and check temperature adjustment it maybe out. Remove handle and slide little adjustment gear out and move it a 1/4 turn and reinstall it to see if any difference occurs. If it is not set right you want be able to turn water off and possibly cartridge maybe be bad. With it being brand new and it should work out of the box take it back if no simple fixes will work. You want the best and not have to work on something you just bought anyway. Something may have been left off the cartridge maybe seat bad or o ring.

Handle keeps wont stay up, keeps turning off.

Yes you can repair this. Sounds like the valve springs and the rubber valve seats may be worn. There are repair kits available at Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, ect. for these faucets. And they usually come with the "tool" you need to remove the faucet handle and the cap and seal nut. After that, it's pretty straightforward, and easy. Two springs, two seats, and an O ring or two, and your'e done. Just make sure to shut off the supply lines to the sink before you start and open the faucet handle to remove any pressure left after you cut the water off. Tighten the cap or seal nut securely after the new springs and seats are in, and you should be good to go.

Which positions of the handle divert waater

The 'stop' is opposite the direction the handle extension points, so in the picture shown with this post the port pointing left is closed and the ports facing down and right are open.

look under the cap for a screw, see if you can tighten,if no screw under the handle is a plastic piece that is attached to the faucet diverter, this may have broken or the screw has come loose.you may have to replace the handle

Water turns from hot to cold

The valve stem has been turned 180 degrees allowing the ports to be on the side opposite the display on the chrome trim. This is a simple solution. Cut the water supply off to the valve, and bleed the pressure off the valve, remove the handle, remove the chrome extension tube behind the handle, pull the brass clip out of it's slot, spint the valve 180 degrees and reassemble. If you have an issue gaing access to the valve cartridge to turn it 180 degrees put the handle back on and carefully pull the cartridge out and turn it 180 and reinsert. This will resove your issue so that the hot is on the left and the cold is on the right. There is one other possibility and that is that the supply lines were reversed when the shower was roughed in. Either way the 180 tiurn will fix the issue. Thanks fo using Fix Ya.

Water is either hot or cold

yes, the valve should be close at the downward postion. and the water should be clod to hot from left to right.
open the handle and pull out the cartridge.
make sure the valve body is installed right side up.
if it is, insert the cartridge with the lock pin on top.
reinstall the handle.
