Question about Craftsman YT 4000 42" Briggs Stratton 24 hp Gas Powered Riding Lawn Tract

1 Answer

YT4000 blades not turning

YT4000 Model 917.288573 We did a tune-up over the weekend and installed a new Primary motor belt on the mower deck. Now the blades do not engage, the belt is loose on the engine pulley. We leveled the deck, and the front to back adjustment was off by almost 2 inches higher in the back. I am wondering if the distance that we pulled up the deck in the front was enough to make the belt loose.

I am wondering if you have the right belt for that machine. or possible its not installed properly. The belt should be tight when engaged. The tightener may not be working as well. These are things to check. Does the belt try to tighten up when you engage it?
I am wondering if the wrong belt was the reason why some one lowered the deck too low.

Check proper belt routing. These models are a little tricky. Also check tensioner spring.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42" mower deck won't disengage

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

How do I determine why the blades will not engage on my mower

With the mower turned off and the deck at its lowest setting, check the top of the deck for any debris like rocks or sticks. Then watch the top of the deck while you move the engage lever. If nothing is moving, you either need to adjust the cable, reattach the cable, or install a new cable. If you see the lever with the pulley on it moving, when the engage lever is locked on, check the tightness of the belt. If it's loose, that is your problem and it could be a stretched belt.

Vibrating 38" deck on MTD yardman mower

Hi, first replace the blade spindle bearings, if you had to hit them to free them up the bearings are shot. Secondly, replace the deck belt. Because you engaged the blades with a siezed bearing the belt will have a worn section where the v will be thinner thus causing the vibration as it passes through the pulleys. Regards Phil.

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly.

Maybe I am missing the obvious but I have had a couple of people that had this problem with since new use of a mower. One of them had the wrong blades with the deck and the 2nd one the baldes were installed with the air foil side DOWN. If you have Air-flow problems under your deck the above is possible or your blade deck drive belt is routed incorrectly. The decal for the blade deck belt routing should still be on your deck. Look at the decal drawing vs the actual routing of the deck belt. It is highly possible that one or more of your blades is driving backward.
If you can not find your decal (would be hard not to find it on a deck not 1 year old!), I will try and look it up but I need the model number of mower and the DECK (2 ea model numbers 1 for mower 1 for deck)

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

My john deere lt 133 mower with a double blade mulching deck, 1 blade stopped working and only 1 blade cuts now, how do i fix this. Thanks Patrick

This model mulching deck uses a flat/ribbed serpentine belt that is set at very high tension. When belt breaks under the cover only one blade will turn due to IT being driven from PTO clutch as the other blade being turned from serpentine belt. This deck was Deere's first and last shot at making a true mulching deck and only made it a couple years. When you buy the VERY expensive belt it will come with detailed instructions on how to install it.Goog luck.

How do I change out the primary belt on a Craftsman 17.5 hp 42" mower? The new belt is around the pulleys but it is very loose.

This belt is easist to install with the deck all the way down. Make sure there are no burrs on any of the pulleys, (will eat up your new belt in short order), also make sure that the 2 drive pulleys for the blades turn freely, (may have grass impacted around them, you may need to remove the 2 guards on top of the deck to clean, (if they do not spin eaisly). Triple check to make sure the belt is properly routed, one mistake and your belt is broken as soon as you engage. With the engine OFF, engage blades to check tension. If the belt is still loose, you likely have it routed incorrectly.
