Replace a thermo coupler for a emberglow fireplace model bvfm18nl

Hi Josh. If you are going to do this yourself its not that hard, Whats going on, pilot wont stay lit. Allot of thermocouples are replaced when really all that is needed is to clean the pilot burner and orfice. If your pilot keeps going out, verify there is not some kind of a cut out switch that will drop the pilot out if it over heats or if its not venting properly.

Lights but turns off in about a minute

It might have a built in thermostat that will light the heater when room temp falls below a certain temp. It should then relight and warm things back up. As long as the pilot stays lit it should work just fine.

Pilot light wont stay lit on gas logs

If the pilot lite comes on, but will not stay on after it has had enough time to heat the thermocouple, you got a bad or the wrong thermocouple. It does take some time to heat that thermocouple.

We just purchased a Williams 1403622 natural gas heater and installed it yesterday. However, the pilot light WILL NOT light. Can you help?

If you mean that the pilot light does not stay lit, you could have a bad thermocouple or a loose connection at the gas valve. Make sure the flame is against the thermocouple. If you mean that the pilot won't light at all, bleed out the gas line a bit more.

My pilot light kept going out. I cleaned it

You may have to get a new thermocouple.

This is a small copper tube that goes from the pilot light area to tha gas valve.

It feels the heat from the pilot and keeps the gas valve open for gas to flow to the pilot or to the logs when in the lit position.

Without the gas valve will stay closed.

Sometimes when you turn a gas heater off for some time, if the source tank has been turned off, the line will bleed the propane and the line will contain mostly air. This is especially true if the supply line is long. In order to light the pilot, you will have to hold the pilot lighting button down for a while (a full minute or longer, depending on the size and length of the supply line) before pure propane arrives at the pilot light jet. You should keep a lighted lighter at the jet so that when the gas arrives, the lighter will light it. After the pilot lights, you will have to keep the button pressed long enough for the thermocouple to get hot enough to set the pilot to stay on. When it is hot enough, you should be able to release the pressed lighting button and the pilot should stay on. If it does, you should be able to light the heater. If the pilot jet never lights, gas is not getting to the regulator. If the pilot will not stay lit after a period of time waiting for it to heat the thermocouple, the thermocouple or the regulator may be bad and need replacement. :-)

Sounds like a bad pilot sensor called a Thermocouple. It is a copper tube that goes from the gas valve to the pilot assembly. It is the smaller of the two tubes. They are available at better hardware or farm stores. It is best to unscrew it from the gas valve and pilot assembly and bring it with you when you shop for one. It is something any mechanically inclined homeowner can replace.

Pilots lites , holds ok for minutes, but once move

Hello KJGreen, It sounds, based on your description, as though the thermocouple is faulty and should be replaced. If the pilot light stays lit and you've left it on for several minutes before turning the knob on to light the log set, then that indicates that the thermocouple is bad.

The thermocouple is a safety device (heat sensor) designed to stop the flow of gas to the burner in the event the gas flame goes out and the pilot goes out. The sensor will only allow the gas valve to open once it has reached the preset temperature.

To confirm that the thermocouple is defective, I would light the pilot light and allow it to remain lit for up to 10 minutes before I attempted to turn on the log burner. If, after 10 minutes, the log burner still won't stay lit, then you know that the thermocouple needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the burner should light, since after 10 minutes, the sensor should be hot enough to signal the gas valve to open.

If you are going to have this replaced, please make sure you use only an approved supplier, since an incorrect replacement part could cause an unwelcome malfunction of the gas log burner. Safety should be primary when dealing with open flame burners.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
