Question about Arris SURFboard SBG900 Wireless Router (DHSBG900)

1 Answer

Router/modem? Forgive my stupidity but is this SBG900 both a router and a modem?? I have had this device for 2 years installed by someone else and it has worked inefficiently for the whole time, momentarily disconnecting me from the internet, then connecting again a split second later. I have learned to live with that. Yesterday, however, i bought a laptop and cannot connect to a website (even though I am connected to the Motorola). Someone suggested that some modem/routers do not support Vista. Others have suggested that I buy a new router. Does that mean I have to buy 2 devices or are they both the same? Thanks for your time.

Thank you so much, Recnef. I was on the phone with Toshiba(my notebook manufacturer) yesterday for quite some time and I don't think the problem is with my computer. I just have to break down and buy a new router/modem. Do you suggest any particular brand?

Your device is a combination Cabal Modem and Wireless Router with a fairly limited security screening profile. While it is doubtful that the problem is the OS on your notebook, it could easily be the wireless network card in your notebook that is the problem.

In this instance replacing the unit is probably the best way to go, as there are much better units available for much less money and in addition you will have full access to the configuration of the router and its security and connection settings.

To replace this device with one new device simply be certain to get a Cabal Router/Modem with Wireless Access.

I like the Linksys brand as they use a standardized web interface for configuration and provide excellent documentation. Their products tend to work well with very little problems and I use them myself.

I want to replace RCA DCM425 cable modem with new, compatible device to continue feeding internet (by ethernet cable) to my desktop (like the present) and provide new WiFi to the home. Please advise. Thank...

You have two choices to achieve your goal (which I understand is to have both you desktop plugged by Ethernet and WiFi throughout your home) :

1. The cheapest way :
You need not be replacing your cable modem, but adding a router to it. There are numerous routers which are WiFi enabled. You can then plug your PC to the router and have WiFi.

2. The cleanest (but less cheap) way :
There are cable modems on the market which will do the job, like the Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem. Once plugged in place of your old modem, depending on your provider, you will either have to download and install the software for your new modem (which should be prompted on your PC when you try to access the Internet), or call the provider to activate the new modem.

I cannot find the security key on the bottom of my motorola surfboard modem

Contact your local Internet Service Provider for assistance with your cable-modem.

Or, if you have connected a wireless-router to the cable-modem, and now you are trying to connect a wireless-device to the wireless-router, that's where a "security-key" is needed.

How do I reset the sbg900 to factory user name and password

This pdf is the manual for your modem:
http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/SBG900/downloads/SBG900_User_Guide.pdf

Page 7 on the document contains a picture of your modem's back side. You'll notice a recessed button that will RESET the modem back to the default values, which include username and password. Press this for at least 5 seconds.

Wireless Doesn't Work - No light.

If someone else setup the router for you they may have turned off the wireless. If you can connect via ethernet use the web based configuration utility to turn it back on.

The intial setup is as follows in the manual:

To provide an initial wireless connection to your network and the Internet:
1 Connect the SBG900 to the cable TV system as described in Section A.
2 On each wireless client computer, install the wireless adapter hardware and
driver software according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3 On each wireless client computer, set up a wireless adapter profile to
“connect” the client to the SBG900. The procedure depends on your
wireless adapter and computer operating system.
In your initial profile, use the SBG900 default wireless Network Name
(ESSID) motorola (case-sensitive).
Your computers are connected but not secure.
The default SBG900 settings provide no wireless security. After
your wireless LAN is operational, be sure to enable security as
described in “Setting Up the Wireless LAN” in the SBG900
User Guide
.

Unpluging the router

When turning off your network always do this:
This should be in the exact order
1.turn off computer
2.turn off router
3.if necessary, turn off modem

To avoid having this problem again, you can just leave your modem and router on all the time, anyway this devices are designed that way(thats why they do not have a switch).

Proper way of turning on the network
1.turn on the modem, wait for 1 minute
2.turn on the router
3.turn on computer

Moto Surfboard SBG900 and VPN Client = SLOW

Hi,
Please see the specicification, also check with you company
IT Admin, to release it to the Max speed or to check the
net work cable, may be too long, also Test the cable with a Data Test meter and conform the data quality. Or change the port from main router.
Otherwise change the whole networking router.
