Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

There are two phone plugs on the fax machine. One plug goes to the outlet. The other is where the phone will plug in. It possibly will have a picture of a phone handset.

Tips for a great answer:
Jan 07, 2013 | AT&T ATT TL86109 Cordless Phone

Mar 18, 2010 | HP LaserJet 3050 All-In-One Printer
Jan 17, 2009 | Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet...
Dec 28, 2008 | Lexmark X3480 All-In-One Printer
The phone line to begin with, can you get a dial tone when you press speaker button? Is it clear? if no dial tone then, Is the phone line from the wall plug into the correct socket of the fax machine ? (it goes into the one marked line, not the ext one).....
next trick would be to plug in a normal phone to wall socket to insure we have dial tone and eliminate it being a telstra fault,
Could also be wise to check filter is installed on that line if we have recently installed ADSL Broadband.
