Question about Canon PowerShot A95 Digital Camera

Memory card problem - video

Hi,

Have installed a larger capacity memory card into the camera, and have only used the camera about three times for video clips......

The first time - all Ok
Second time - seemed Ok, but could not recover video at all when I tried to download it to PC. Screen message is "naming error"

Reformatted card and tried again......
No go. Hubby took quite a few video clips, then we were unable to play them back or even download them - "naming error" again.

Now, the memory card says it's nearly full, so clearly there's something still in there? Any suggestions gratefully accepted - it's all family stuff I really don't want to lose if I can help it!. Thanks.

    Hi 'mydigihelp'!

Sorry if i've posted this reply in the wrong place!! Anyway, camera is a Canon A630 - have gone to website as you suggested and there are no downloads available.

Am going to try resetting the file numbering to auto reset and see if that makes any difference. Then will have a go with a card reader if that doesn't work.

    Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure how to fix the memory card, perhaps you can purchase a memory card reader (usually USB, runs about 10-20 dollars) that you can transfer your photos and/or video to your computer with.
As for the memory card itself, many older cameras do not have the capability to recognize and save properly to large capacity memory cards.

There are things called firmware updates, which can help the problems in some cases, you would have to go to Canon's website and find out if you have a firmware update for your camera (I didn't see what kind of camera you have, so if you can reply with that I can do some digging).

Let me know if this helps or if you need more information!

I recently purchased an Epson Photo PC 3100Z Digital Camera (used). It appears to take pictures but does not store in on the memory card. A code 181 flashes in the top display window. The memory card is...

It is probably having trouble with the capacity of the memory card. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards.

You don't say what type of memory card you have. "SD" cards larger than about 1GB are actually SDHC cards. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

How long does it take to format the SD card? I have been waiting for this card to format for an hour. Message appears "no card" when the card is in the camcorder. Thanks,

You don't say what make or model of camera or the size of the memory card, so I am going to have to do some guessing.

My guess is that the memory card is incompatible with the camera. That would explain why the card is not recognised and why the camera cannot format it (it tries to, but hangs). Maybe it is having trouble with the size of the memory. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards. It is often difficult to find out the maximum capacity memory card a camera will use, as today's cards are much larger that those available when the manual for the camera was written.

Is it a SDHC card? SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

You could try formatting the card. There is a function in the camera menus to do this. If it won't format then it may simply be too high capacity. It is often difficult to find out the maximum capacity a camera will use, as today's memory cards are much larger that those available when the manuals for even recent cameras were written.

Is a SDHC Memory Card 4GB compatible with my Canon Powershot SD600 camera?

Your camera will accept a maximum SD card capacity of 2GB. It simply isn't capable of handling anything of a larger capacity and in particular is incompatible with the more technically advanced SDHC cards.

Your fix is to either replace your camera with a later model or to stick to using SD cards with a maximum 2GB capacity.

Memory card saying "full" when its not

Your problem is that you are using an incompatible type of memory card.

Your camera was designed to use SD cards with a maximum capacity of 2GB. It cannot use larger capacity models, and is also incompatible with the later SDHC cards.

SDHC cards are the same shape and will fit your camera, but have differences beneath the skin and so won't work properly in your camera. Without any memory card in place your camera uses internal memory; it's then only by lucky chance that your camera has sufficient SDHC compatibility to allow you to transfer the internal memory image to the SDHC card when you subsequently insert it into your camera.

Your only solutions are to either use an SD card with a maximum capacity of 2GB or to replace the camera with a later model which is fully SDHC compliant.
