While this is a little bit of a stab, if you replace the batteries in both units, do it at the same time, If the batteries are known good ones, simply take them both out and let the units sit for about 5 minutes before you put them back in. Make sure the battery contacts are clean and devoid of corrosion. Put them back together without pressing the button. I assume it is of the newer "self learning" style. In which case, hold the ringer button down until the chiime goes off.
If it is one of the optical greeters, there would be a setup switch position that allows you to focus/align the reflector for the greeter. Usually it keeps chiming until the alignment is correct whereupon it shuts off when things are right. Then you reset the switch to normal. If no switch for set up at all- just follow the same procedure until it stops. You can usually "eyeball" them pretty close without effort.

Doubtful they are compatible. If they are set by dip switches and you set them the same bot doesn't work-not compatible.
