Question about Singer Sewing Machines

Why was it sewing fine then just stopped and seemed jammed?

The Hand Wheel will not turn toward me. The needle is threaded and the bobbin thread is coming thru. No obvious problem.

It's likely that somewhere there is thread wrapped around a part. That can happen, for instance, during winding a bobbin without your noticing. Thread can also be wrapped around underneath the bobbin basket (holds the bobbin case). You may have to remove a cover to locate it. You didn't mention what model your machine is, but it would be helpful to purchase a service manual for it. It will at least tell you how to remove a cover to locate the problem. They are available at Service Parts Online; if your model is not listed, you can send an email, and chances are they can purchase it for you.

you need to replace your shukle that holds the tread bobbing below.it is either slack or broken . if it is slack then you tighten the little screw that holds a cover that gives the thread tension .if its broken then replace it.once the thread is slack below it will cause your thread to bundle up.

There is a smaller wheel in the center of the big wheel. This has to be tightened in order for the needle to operate. This smaller wheel is needing to be in the loosened state to wind the bobbin. The needle should not go up & down then. Just hold the outside wheel & tighten the inner wheel. This should solve your problem. You may have put the timing out, however, try this before you despair too much......

Ensure the presser foot is firm enough for the fabric you are using and that it will not just pull through easily by hand with the foot and feeddogs together (as the needle ascends), or things will not proceed, and you will be stitching in the same spot.

Generally a setting of 3 seems to work for general purposes, but if you are using very light or very heavy fabric, a sample is always a good idea before you start in earnest....also match the needle to the work for best results.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint jams....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.
The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle,
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your
projects).

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with
a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to
disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension.

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits)

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned.

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is,
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover !

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistant diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

SOURCE: Hand Wheel Won't Turn

The "Bobbin stopper" is in the incorrect position. It moves from side to side in a switch like motion. In one direction, it locks up the machine. That is, you can turn the wheele backwards, but not forward.. The bobbin stopper can be found in the book that cam with the machine. In our book, it is item #9.

Needle wont pick up bobbin thread


START WITH: SHARP NEEDLE (NEW), GOOD THREAD (NOT FUZZY-LONG STRANDS), ADJUST TENSION OF BOBBIN AND TOP.
1. Check the bobbin area and make sure the hook(pointed thing) and bobbin are all secure.
2. After you have adjusted the tension and reinstalled the bobbin: Extend three inches of thread from the bobbin.
3. After threading the top place the thread under the pressure foot and hold on to the thread. Turn the hand wheel towards you.
4. The needle has went under the throat plate (feed dogs plate) and begins to rise. You should feel the thread get caught and give a little resistance while you continue to turn the hand wheel.
5. The bobbin thread should come up with the needle thread.
6. If this hasn't taken place check to make sure the needle is inserted the right direction and totally pushed in. Retry again.
7. Look at your bobbin while turning the hand wheel. The needle thread should ride across the bobbin case and exit to the top of the machine again.
8. If these have not worked you will need to have your machine timed or the hook replaced.

My bobbin seems to be incorrectly, after a struggle -now the needle keeps losing its thread, so I'm sowing with no top thread!!! What am I doing!!'


Assuming your bobbin is threaded correctly. Try to pull your top thread thru the needle a bit longer & suggest you turn your hand wheel towards you till the needle just poked thru the fabric, then only you start sewing.

The needle is stuck in the Shark 612C model sewing machine, any solutions?


Try http://www.fixsewingmachine. com I also suggest that you clean bobbin case. Now, when needle is "stuck", this requires patience and care in "jiggling" the hand wheel to and fro until needle point begins to clear the jammed area. Carefully snip one thread that moves up under needle and jiggle hand wheel by carefully turning hand wheel toward you to see if you can move the take-up lever all the way up to the UP position. Look at bobbin case area and remove bobbin. Cut bobbin thread and remove bobbin case. Sweep gently with brush underneath case and carefully, gently sweep over the feed dogs, poking very ends of brush bristles into "teeth" area to remove lint, fuzz ball/s, and any loose thread/s. Raise presser foot, remove (possibly bent) needle. Insert new needle of appropriate size for fabric weight. Make sure needle pushed all the way up into needle bar groove, at side to back. Keep presser foot RAISED while rethreading. This allows thread to locate tension discs, and HOLD THREAD TAUT. Replace bobbin, making sure thread is EVENLY distributed on it. Imablanced bobbins cause jams, and bobbins with burrs and scratches can real havoc as well as the hook part of the shuttle where the bobbin fits. Smooth such areas with emery cloth carefully, ever so gently. Hope my suggestions are a solution for you. Jimmy

Remove thread. Remove the needle plate. Turn hand wheel toward you. Rethread machine. Make sure presser foot in up position when you thread needle. Make sure needle all way up in shaft, flat side back and more rounded side facing you Turn hand wheel toward you again and observe the following: As needle comes down, make sure the needle's eye makes pass by the scarf of the needle. I have a singer cxl electronic sewing machine and i have a problem with the needle either not moving or stopping when stitching the larger motifs or the zigzag stitch, somtimes the needle jut moves too...

A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in the hook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towards you (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. *Always turn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you (clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam your machine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position before you start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam your machine in the bobbin case.

Your description of the needle hitting the plate or foot is an indication that the machine's timing has become unaligned which can be caused as indicated above by turning the hand wheel away from you - the correct way is to *Always turn the hand wheel towards you.

The thread hangs up inside the bobbin holder


A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in the hook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towards you (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. *Always turn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you (clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam your machine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position before you start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam your machine in the bobbin case.

Singer 600 touch and sew


Hold the tail of the needle thread loosely.  
Turn the hand wheel toward you (counter clockwise) and lowerthe needle into the hole in the plate. 
Turn the hand wheel until the needle rises back up to it's highest position.

You will see a loop of thread wrapped around the upper thread. 
Open the loop and find the free end of the bobbin thread.  
Voila!
Now you can sew.

Threading the bobbin - winding thread onto the bobbin.

Position the new empty bobbin onto the vertical bobbin rod next to the end wheel. Click the rod to the right to engage drive. Hold the outer end wheel with left hand, and rotate the inner wheel anticlockwise by about a 1/2 turn (it stops) this removes drive from the foot and needle mechanism.

From a spool of thread on the top, thread to a loop/post on the left on the top. Then back to the bobbin you want to wind. Thread through a hole from the inside-out. Hold the thread vertically above the bobbin while you depress the footswitch to start winding. Let go when it's turned a few times.

Move bobbin shaft left, and tighten end wheel after winding enough.

Fitting bobbin-

Move footplate towards you, insert bobbin in hole so that bobbin rotates anticlockwise when thread is pulled, then pull thread into the fine notch towards you. After this position thread away from you, and slide the footplate closed.

To start / load thread. Hold the end 3" of the thread through the needle behind the sewing foot. hand crank towards you to sew first stitch in air. This should retrieve the lower thread - which you can catch with a handy pair of scissors. Then pull both threads rearwards - ready to sew.

**Note -
If the threading spindle is on the top, push to the right to engage, On the earlier versions, you have to thread it through a wire hook, then down and around a plate with two slots near the bottom right, before winding around the bobbin which is held horizontally as a direct drive off the handwheel.

Needle jams and breaks off


Needle jams....Thread is caught in the hook...solution...Remove the upper thread and bobbin case,turn the handwheel backwards and forwards by hand and remove the thread remands.

Needles breaks
1. Needles is damaged..Insert new needle
2. The needle is not correctly inserted....insert flat side towards the back
3. Wrong needle size for the fabric...Choose a needle to suit the thread and fabric.
