The carriage on Olympia SM3 typewriter is stuck

The carriage on my Olympia SM3 will not move. The carriage lock is not engaged and I checked the linkage to make sure it was moving and not engaged. I can not get it to budge. Won't move when typing, and can't get it to budge when hitting the carriage release or carriage return. Won't budge in either direction. Any ideas?

SOURCE: Carriage return problem

If it returns with the express key the latching mech. on the rt. side is probably gummy. Take off the case, get some WD40 and spray the mechinism that latches the ret on the rt. side below the platen.

SOURCE: Olivetti Lettera 32 typwritter carriage doesn't move

If the locking lever is off, then the carriage is bound, or one of the tabs is hung, try releasing all the tabs, pushing the space bar or the tab key while gently moving the carriage.
Try all of the function like shift while gently pushing on the carriage always to the right..
also check the that the margins are not locked.
This could be a lot of different things...

SOURCE: Underwood no. 5 typewriter doesn't advance when hit keys

the cord is shaped much like a shoe lace, and these make great replacements, a spare clip can be fashioned out of a paper clip, it's not a precision part. the spring if broken can be replaced with any clock style spring, i bought a wind up kitchen timer at the dollar store (same for the shoe lace) and took the spring from that. for $2.14, got mine working good as new

I've seen one on an olympia typewriter. Like a switch on the left side of the machine next to the numbers line. Your problems could be Lock is bent, not connected fully, needs cleaning, oiling.

I really am confused by your question, the starwheel you talk about is most likly on the end of the platen (rubber Roller) the star that you talk about is held in a set position by deten roller or wire that falls between the teeth. Usually a lever to release that roller so you can align the paper properly. May the roller or detent is missing, also make sure when you turn the "star" the rubber platen will move also. On the end of the knob there is usually a pin or knob you push in or pull out to allow you to turn the platen freely with no detent. Make sure it is in the correct position, Olympia are excellen machines. Remember do not look to deep, usually simple fix....

Printer just beeps and carriage wont move.

No...you may have broken wire or wires in the cable harness that runs from the carriage unit down to the PCB. The cable/carriage will have to be relaced if they are broken.

Carriage remains stationary when typing. Is there a way to unlock

Mant portables have a lock to hold the carriage in place while in the case, on the rt. or left sides below the carriage.

Hope this helps
