Question about Garden

Lawn tractor will not start

Checked oil and noticed oil cap was not screwed on tight. Turned key, engine does not crank (have gas). Checked for loose spark plug wires and noticed oil on top of engine and side of oil cap. Guessing this was from hot oil spurting out of loose cap. What steps to look at to fix not starting. This is a 2014 model and was running fine the last mowing (yesterday).

Spark and gas??? Must have both. Pull spark plug wire and check for spark. If you have spark, check gap on spark plug. Check the bowl on carburetor. loosen bowl screw to see if gas is coming out. If you have gas coming out, carb needs to be taken off and cleaned or rebuilt.

hi there FIXor Destroy

have you checked and tried running tractor with the fuel tank cap loose or off in case its not venting
and stopping fuel flow , have you checked for debris in the carb and main jets / emulsion tubes and air bleeds ? if it has a fuel pump is it working properly ?

are you sure the valves dont have tight clearances ?

is the tank getting alot of vibration , may be getting vapour loc from fuel agitation in the tank, or some kind of heat transfer from the engine to the fuel

take a look

Engine won't Start

If you have 3 qts. of oil in your mower, drain it immediately. It only holds 3 PINTS or 48 ozs or 1 1/2 qts. Next, remove your spark plug and put the end away from the hole (to prevent possible arching and fire) and crank the engine over. Probably, a lot of oil/gas will blow out, clearing your cylinder. Clean the plug and try to restart. If it still reaches a point where the engine will not turn past while trying to crank, the valves need to be readjusted. Also check by smelling the dipstick that there is no gas mixed in the oil. That would mean your carb needle and seat are leaking.

Try running it again and when it starts to die remove the gas cap and see if it starts to run better. It's possible that the gas tank isn't venting correctly. If that doesn't work post back and we'll try to come up with some other solutions.
