SOURCE: camera shuts down
my e550 is super-sensitive to battery types - I get this all the time with my nimh batteries but never with regular aa's, although they only last about an hour !

Does the mechanical action of the button still work? i.e. can you feel the click when you press the button?
If it still feels normal then it is probable that the ribbon connecting it to the main board has moved slightly so that it has broken the connection inside the socket and will just require seating correctly.
If not then you may have to source another camera for donor parts.

The ribbon strip that connects the keypad to the board has failed.
This strip has 2 folds made in it when the camera was built. These folds stress the ribbon and eventually break.
Replacement ribbon is the only real solution

That camera could have two things causing it, 1 the soft press is the auto focus. Most cameras have a half press or soft press to turn on the auto focus and the hard press or press to take the picture. That could just be the camera. Some cameras that can be turned off in the menu. If that is not the case and it does not auto focus when you press it, then it is the button. We used to see that a lot with cameras. The button gives sometimes.
