If the wiring adheres to accepted standards, green will need to be connected to metal, exposed or if unit is all plastic, inside.

Nearly all manufacturers use these colors by function:

Green = Safety (earth) ground.
White=AC neutral
Black= HOT The high side of the AC line (my mnemonic: black is de ath.)
Red=Switched line, which may be hot or neutral.

Neither green nor white should have any voltage although the white, may have some minor measurable value of a few volts since it is the return line which may have some current flowing that can cause some voltage 'drop.'

If you are in the US and have a meter, check from the green wire to the round, center pin of the AC plug- you should have only a few 10ths of an Ohm.

What happens having one broken wire?

Not trying to be funny, but it depends on the wire, if your air purifier is still running or not, whether you have lost hi/low settings etc. Or is your plug wire and you lost the internal ground wire. Attached link you are able to download user manual. Need to be more detailed, color of wire, location of break. Hope this helps, or provide make model, and other details. PEACE

My freshair 2.0 turns on and right back off. the screen lights up and then goes out.

The most common reason for surging or changing power levels is a loose connection somewhere.

1) Make sure the plug in the back is inserted firmly and the wall socket is live. The wall socket should not be powering a high-use appliance such as a furnace or refrigerator.
2) Make sure the plate is inserted firmly and correctly in the top and bottom "tracks" inside the machine. The metal contact fingers should be pressing firmly and evenly on both sides of the plate, in the metal screen area.
3) Inspect the interior of the machine, looking for loose wires, corroded clips, any broken wires or connections. (You or a handy friend may be able to repair the loose wires or clips; it's a pretty basic fix.)
If none of these troubleshooting steps solve the problem, the problem may be in the computerized system. For that, you'll need to get in touch with Vollara (formerly EcoQuest) customer service. 800-989-2299.

It worked well until I plugged it in to a non-grounded receptacle. Now it doesn't turn on. What do I do? Bruce

It's likely Ground Fault GFI 'compliant' and needs to be grounded.look for a GROUND ADAPTER PLUG at a home improvement or hardware store. It's an adapter with three holes on one side ,two prongs and a wire on the other.connect the wire to the screw in the center of the receptacle cover to ground it.

Can someone tell me how the two wires in the bottom of the unit are supposed to be attached? I have not opened the unit, but see that one end of the two wires are attached to the two little plastic...

The wires you see are the high voltage grid wires -- these burn thru and break -- the more often the unit is cleaned the longer these wires last, but 18 months max is my experience.

There is no easy way to fix this -- even if one does the complicated, extremely nerve wracking reapir (with titanium wire) the unit will fail again soon.

Far as I know, there is no longer a repair service for these units.

I have a professional series ionic breeze gp. It stopped working and has a red light on-something I had never seen before. Can you help with this model?

Hi there,

Well there is a small micro switch that is actuated by the grid. This is mounted on the side of the top control piece. There are two wires attached to the little circuit board, usually one is corroded so you need to cut it back and soder it to the center pin of the switch. also check the fuse.

Good Luck!!

Thanks

IONIC BREEZE GP

Okay, after working on my Ionic Breeze Quadra I have fixed it. My problem was it wouldn't turn on even though the fins were clean.

1. Unplug
2. Turn the machine upside down (there are 4 screws holding the bottom stand on) remove the screws
3. once bottom is off there are 2 screws sideways helping the hold the 2 sides together. Remove those 2 screws.
4. Turn the machine uprgiht and remove the middle fins (the ones you clean)
5. Remove the 4 screws that are deep in the 4 holes when you look down inside (you can't see the screws, I had to feel for them with a phillips head narrow screwdriver)

(it will be easier if your screwdriver has magnetic head for next step.)

6. after removing the 4 screws gently work lose the top (part that has the little lights and turn on push switch)

7. turn the breeze on its side, you will find about 5 or 6 tiny screws holding the two sides of the outside louver case together. Remove all these screws. You will be thankful for the magnetic end, I have small fingers and still had a problem catching the little screws.

8. You want to take off the screws from both sides but only remove one side.

9. Being careful of the wires (I left that side alone) I worked from the wire free side and using a bottle of rubbing alcohal and lots and lots of q-tips I gentle cleaned off all the gunk on all the little metal pieces at the bottom of the breeze (on the inside where the wires are). Clean as good as you can, you will find the metal pieces covered with what looks like tar but it comes off with the alcohal.

10. Using a can of 'canned air' like you'd use for a computer, gently blow the rest of the breeze parts getting all the dust away but being careful not to damage the electronics. (there are a lot of little computer boards). I didn't find any dust in the electrical parts in the very bottom of the breeze, just above where the fins are and some at the top where the controls are.

11. I cleaned the 1/2 I took completely off with some rubbing alcohal, gets that **** off pretty good but didn't mess with the side with the wires, just blew the dust out, gently cleaned a bit and on the outside.

12. To put back together, first I gently put the outer middle pieces together and then gently put the control top back on and replaced those 4 screws. Then I put the 10 or 12 tiny screws back into the middle, then the 2 screws in the bottom sides and 4 screws putting the stand back on. I stood it up, plugged it in (make sure its dry) and turned it on and the light came on and it is working great.

I've had mine for 3 years so I think they occasionally need a thorough cleaning. Except for the canned air I bought nothing else. Everyone has rubbing alcohal and q-tips in their homes. When I first started I didn't know how to dismantle it and tried to clean the inside with long q-tips but it was too hard. Those little metal pieces in the bottom make some sort of connection to the fins we pull out and clean so I guess they need good contact.

I hope I've helped all of you with the problem of the Ionic Breeze Quadra and I suspect any other iconic breeze type machine by sharper image pretty much comes apart the same way and may have the same problems. I don't know how to post this so that everyone can see it as a general solution. Maybe you guys at FixYa can help with that. --- Harry Potter Without the Wand (and a female to boot!)

A broken switch on a small portable ozone machine--X-15 or XL

Hi again, epyn,

As I think about this more, I'd say that the switch you have would probably _not_ work. What you have is somewhat like a conventional 3-way switch. With the Alpine/Ecoquest switch, I suspect one terminal is for power to the internal light/LED, one is the load to the switch, and the third would be the ground for both.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know - I'd like to resolve this for you. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Oreck XL air purifier problems

You probably have an open circuit in the high voltage circuit. Most likely cause is a broken or disconnected wire. The high voltage wires are very small diameter stainless steel and are connected to alternating aluminum plates by a crimp connection at the ends of the plated. If you insert an object like a brush or wood tongue depressor/popsickle stick in to scrub the plates during cleaning you run the risk of pulling the wires lose or worst case, breaking them. If you just pulled some loose they can be repaired ( I know because I have done it) but you have to partially disassemble the cleaner cartridge to get to the end of the plate(s) with the disconnected wire(s), open the tab that grips the wire, insert the wire in the tab, re-crimp it, and then re-assemble the cleaning unit. I would rate it as moderately difficult. Be careful in bending all the tabs as they are aluminum and will break if bent too much or too many times. Good luck.

The low button light is going out.

"A blinking light indicates when the blades should be wiped clean with a damp cloth." I actually had a "handyman" contract last year to visit an elderly gentleman once a month and clean all 9 of his Ionic Breeze GP air purifiers. Before I did that for him, they would make hissing noises and he really didn't like that. Here's how to clean the operative compnents of these machines: First, unplug the machine and place on a work surface, such as a table or kitchen counter. Second, remove the metal blade insert from the top by gripping the release tab and lifting it up and out. Also remove the front and back grilles by pressing on the plastic tab at the bottom and lifting up on them. Third, use a damp rag or paper towel to wipe the three metal blades clean. Do not immerse this assembly in water, because it has to be completely dry when re-installing it in the machine. Fourth, use a small piece of damp paper towel to VERY GENTLY wipe clean the two thin wires inside the unit. These are located behind the two rubbery flat blades just inside the unit and can be accessed from the front side. You won't damage these rubbery flat blades by pushing your hand gently between them, but be VERY CAREFUL when wiping the wires clean. (This step is important, as the wires must be clean.) Fifth, using another bit of damp paper towel, carefully clean the wire attached to the inside of the front grille. Dry this off with a dry bit of paper towel, then clean any accumulated dirt off the front & back grilles. Check the metal contact near the bottom of the front grille (attached to the wire) to verify that it's clean and will make good electrical contact. Sixth, pick the unit up and turn it upside-down & right-side up about 6 to 8 times. The two wires inside have plastic beads on them that slide up and down the wires. This brushes any bits of leftover dust or lint off of the wires. (Again, these wires must be VERY clean.) Seventh, replace the front and back plastic grilles by placing them in their slots and sliding them down to snap into place. Verify that the assembly with the three metal blades is COMPLETELY dry, using a hair dryer if necessary to dry off damp areas, then slide it back into place from the top of the machine. Now the cleaning process is done, so plug the unit in and turn it on to test operation. If it makes ANY noise, then some component is not completely cleaned off, or still has a presence of moisture, which must be completely dried off before the machine is ready for operation. Hope this helps! ;)
