The deck has an idler pulley that keeps tension on the belt. The idler pulley is mounted on a pivoting bracket, that has a spring which provides the tension. You have to move the bracket so as to take the tension off the belt, thereby allowing you to slip the belt off the other drive pulleys

Craftsman lawn tractor will not move

There are a few things to look a. The belt, is it slipping or loose? Check and small idler pulleys from the drive belt to the engine. The large pully on the transmission is keyed to the shaft. If either the key is sheared or the shaft worn enough, the shaft will spin but not turn the pulley under load. Also note that the axles are keyed to the rear wheels. A sheared key there will cause it to not move also. You should see the axle turning freely inside the wheel if this is the case. Here is a parts diagram so you at lease have an idea of the areas to check.

Android -man, the number is 917270622. Rich

well,,, that's the first thing you have to do. put the break, put transaxle on neutral, lower the deck, lay down on floor and inspect the belt by turning with and and looking for chips on belt. also look at idler moving by hand to see if bearing on idler is good. then release the brake but lock wheels and check tension on belt.

14hp craftsman 42 in.deck. where to reattach engage/ disengage rod on the deck

This can be diffucult if u are not familliar with your tractor but the easiest way is to slip the drive belt off the front pto pulley so that you can move the tention idler by hand. Move the idler arm by hand while watcing the bellcrank that attaches the rod you are talking about. Now attach the rod into the bellcrank with a number 2 hpc clip This should do it. Hope this helps :)

I can't disingage the lever to cut grass on my craftsman riding lawn mover. Now because of this I can't start the mover.

the lever moves an arm on the deck connected to a pivoting plate holding the idler pulley. when you push up the lever, it pulls the pivot [and idler pulley] back and puts tension on the belt. if this pivot gets rusted, it sticks and won't release tension on the belt. find the pivot point and lubricate it thoroughly with oil, wd-40, or liquid wrench, then work it back and forth by hand until it is freed up

Can't get stick to move down to disengage, push with all my power

With the engine off, reach under your deck and pull on the belt. This will force the idler arm back into disengaged position so you can start it. You can probably free the mechanism up with penatrating oil by spraying the pivot point on the idler arm ( the bracket the idler is mounted to that moves back and forth) while alternatly engaging the lever and pulling the belt till it frees up and returns by itself.
