You can fit just about any motherboard in the case but would probably only consider an ATX or Micro ATX. ATX is the largest physical size mobo followed by the Micro. You wouldn't need to worry about anything smaller as they are more expensive anyway.
I would be inclined to replace the power supply also as that will be 'tired' and would probably struggle to power the new board. I never fit anything less than a 500 watt power supply. They're not that expensive anyway and it's always better to have power to spare than to be on the borderline.

Emachine T5234 beeps 5 times and won't turn on

5 Short BeepsYour motherboard is complaining. Try reseating the memory and rebooting. If that doesn't help, you should consider another motherboard. You could probably get away with just replacing the CPU, but that's not too cost-effective. Its just time to upgrade!

What motherboard can i upgrade to 836GM Media Center PentiumD 820 Dual-Core 2.8GHz

I believe this was answered for you. It's a Gateway which takes a proprietorial motherboard. Yes, you could get a new motherboard and processor to fit, but at the price you'd pay, I would suggest you get a new computer instead. The prices are really low right now.

I recently purchased Two PNY 1Gb ram to upgrade from original 512mb. When I put both 1Gb ram in the slots, the computer will not boot up. When I take one out and put the original 512 back in with the other...

I don't know your specific model, but some of the Emachines had some memory directly on the motherboard. With the 1Gb and 512Mb sticks installed, boot the machine and report how much memory the system sees. Perhaps the onboard memory is causing you to exceed the 2Gb limit.

Please post the memory size you get here with the above sticks.

The most important thing to be aware of is the "Measurements" if it don't fit! You can't use it. There are various :speeds, power needed, this will go by: "Voltage & Amps needed, or requirements. Upgrade mother board t3958

to upgrade a motherboard... you would need to replace it with another one, on a motherboard you can upgrade memory, cpu, video card, hard drive, parts that are connected to it, but you don't really upgrade the motherboard itself..
