Question about Whirlpool Dishwashers

Open Question

Why will my dishwasher only run on pots and pans cycle and why do the dishes have a powder type coating and spots when the cycle ends?

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher, model # GU2300XTVS1. Without pressing the start button: The rinse only cycle is the only cycle that will light up when pressed. Under options, every light comes on when pressed. When I press the start button without choosing a cycle, the pots & pan light comes on and only runs under this cycle. When the dishwasher stops the dishes have spots and a powder type coating on the dishes. I have pressed rinse only and heated dry 3 times in 15 seconds and nothing happened. I have used LemiShine dishwasher cleaner, detergent, booster and spot-free rinse aid. I later replaced the rinse aid with vinegar. The results were the same.

Depending on hardness of your water you will only need 1 teaspoon of soap in dispenser 1 teaspoon for prewash. Your water temp needs to be 140 or more. Run the hot water at the sink till its hot before starting wash. Dont forget to use jet dry....

Kenmore 13789 draining/cleaning issues

Check your wash arms - make sure the holes or nozzels are clear (not blocked), and make sure they are free to turn. Make sure you are not over-loading the dishwasher or placing large plates or pans in front of the soap dispenser. Next is to check to see if enough water is going into the DishWasher (DW). This varies with different models, so it's hard to tell you how much is enough. Next thing to check is to make sure the heater is working to heat the water during the wash cycle. (Listen for the soap dish to open, then open the door 10 or 15 minutes later and see if the water is hot.) If your dishwasher has a removable filter, you need to take that out and clean it at least once a month. And finally, if your dishwasher is all encrusted with calcium and hard-water deposits, you probably need to run a dishwasher cleaner in the machine. (Use Dishwasher Magic, or Finish Corp's Dishwasher cleaner, or Glisten, or even Lemi-Shine detergent-booster powder or their dishwasher cleaner.
Hope this helps!

The problem is hard water. Go to www.dishwasherfilter.com and get their new product. It filters the water and takes out the hard minerals that cause spots and clog dishwashers. It is very affordable and has a money back guarantee.

My viking dishwasher does not rinse the soap scum off the dishes

Maybe . . . remove the lower rack and invert it. Look for cracked or missing plastic coating, exposed, rusted & possibly "swollen" inner steel rod/wire. If found, remove the upper rack and look for more of the same. What you think is "soap scum" is probably rust and other iron compounds leached by the dish soap out of the rusted steel onto the dishes and the dishwasher interior. The following worked for me . . .

To clean the interior (with both racks removed), set to "No Heat" dry, then "Pot & Pan" wash and allow to fill. Open door, dump in a bottle of "Lime A-Way", close & latch door and allow to complete cycle. This should remove most rust and iron-sulphate deposits from interior. If not, scrub them with Lime A-Way and a ScotchBrite pad, then cycle again.

Racks must be replaced (Viking are very expensive, Asko, Bosch, or other lower racks may fit: check your neighbors' racks for fit), upper rack must be Viking unless you can exact-match the Asko or Bosch equivalent.

Possible fix: remove the loose plastic coating and flaking rust with a knife, ruff plastic coating with ScotchBrite, clean with rubbing alcohol, then treat metal/rust with "rust converter" (hardware or home imp store), wash with soapy water, rinse, then clean with rubbing alcohol, dry fully, coat with "high temp" (orange or yellow) silicone sealant (auto part store), covering exposed metal and a half inch or so over the plastic coating. Let set for a day or two.

A trip through the dishwasher for all your stained stainless, glasses and non-metallic coated or non-metallic decorated dishes with Lime A-Way as above (on new or "rebuilt" racks) should get the metallic scum and rust off them.

Dust on dishes after "clean" and spotted

The problem sounds like a hard water situation....Do you have hard water?...does your coffee pot take a long time to make coffee (an older coffee pot) if so you may consider a small water softener attached to the water inlet line or a water filtration device...as hard water will do just that..leave spots on the glasses and silverware as well as colored dishes, that look like little circles of whitish dried chemical or powder stains. Yes you can run a full bottle of vinegar in your dishwasher but monitor the cycle closely so it does not go into the drain cycle right away...and let it run through an extended wash cycle 2-3 times....before it drains so as to be able to maximize the effect...and as the aforementioned suggestion states you can also run some CLR through the system...BUT be CERTAIN to run it through several wash and rinse cycles after doing so as the chemicals in CLR are not healthy...and do not leave any dishes in as you do so (whereas vinegar is just Acetic acid and organically based). Also it is impossible for any concrete to have gotten into the dishwasher from anything poured down the kitchen sink drain since there is a valve in the drain pump called a "backflow preventer" that prohibits anything from entering the dishwasher. Also you may want to take out all the trays and remove the screem in the bottom of the dishwasher that covers the engine and pump assembly where the sprayer arm sits atop of. After doing so ( three -6 screws) clean anyfood or residue found ther out with a shop vac or something and reassemble.
I hope this helps....if so please let me know by rating me ...thank you....The Fang

Dry white powder on dishes after washing

Hard water maybe?Or your heating element in the bottom may need some cleaning. take pour some vinegar on it and see if the lime bubbles. if so get something like lime away or CLR and pour it on the element let it set for 5 to 10 min then run it through a cycle for rinsing it all out. If the problem goes away for a while then comes back within 90 days I believe you need a water softener.

Soap hardens in the dispenser and dishes don't come clean

Either your dishwasher is not getting the water hot enough to dissolve the powder, or you need to switch brands. Try a liquid/gel type of dishwasher detergent.
Try stopping the washer a few minutes after you start a wash cycle. Open the door -- if there is a lot of steam coming out at you, it's not the water temperature. If there is no steam, your dishwasher is not getting hot water and/or the heating coil is not working.
