My z155 is blowing smoke for about 2 hrs riding it has about 20 hrs ride time on it ,it has lost power ,would this be my valves and if so what is the clearence plz.has oily exaust tip inside

More likely a blown gasket head. A leak-down should tell you if this this the problem.

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap

first make sure the air intake screen on top of engine is not clogged with debris if thats not a concern you could have a faulty ignition coil etc your engine should have a two year warranty and can be serviced at no charge to you at your local briggs service dealer make sure and check your manual for the fine print though. Briggs makes a great engine and very rarely have I ever seen a problem allthough if you were to have an engine issue it will accur during the first few hours of opperation good luck

SOURCE: Sears Craftsman riding mower V belt getting chewed

I believe you may have the belt over one or more of the belt retainers next to the pulleys. They are 5 or 6 inches long and about a 1/4 inch in diameter. You have to loosen them when you put the belt on then adjust them to where they are just barely touching the back of the belt. They keep the belt from jumping off.

White smoke or semi white can be produced in several ways. One way is oil this is normally a whitish blue to blue smoke and has the apparent smell of oil being burned.

Have john deere d120 ride single cyl B&S 21hp they are prone to head gasket failure after 50 hrs.Would having the head retensioned reduce this happening would valve clearances need rechecking. Thanks


has the head gasket failed already or are you surmising that it will happen soon
having the head studs re-tensioned would help reduce the possibility of it happening as the studs are small in diameter and can stretch and loose tension
it would be advisable to check the valve clearance as B&S valves tend to stretch and that makes start when hot difficult

Blowing white smoke out of exhaust


sounds like it is still overfilled ,, oil is leaking on the back side of the piston .. or may be a blown head gasket and being overfilled was just a coincidence if it is a briggs motor I would be suspect of a head gasket.

I have a 21 H.P. in my John Deere riding mower and it started blowing blue smoke out of exhaust excessively, I think i might have have blown a valve seal because motor still runs fine, just provides...


first check the oil and sill if it has a heavy gas smell there has been a lot of needle valve problems in carb lately then i would do a compression test they have been known to blow head gaskets and with over head valves there is oil up in the cylinder heads and a valve seal wouldn't be a constent flow of smoke

Hi, Maria your instrument gauges and lights can alert you to most electrical and engine issues they can not warn you about failed engine gaskets or seals so your engine has to resort to old fashion alert methods of colored "SMOKE SIGNALS" here is a breakdown of their meaning:
1. COLORLESS OR SLIGHTLY BLUE SMOKE on start-up means your air/fuel mixture is the right composition and everything is well burnt in your combustion chamber.
2. BLUE SMOKE on startup is usually caused by failed valve seals dripping oil into the combustion chamber when the engine is not running.
3. YELLOW OR BROWNISH SMOKE at start-up means your air/fuel mixture is too lean. Too lean means that there is low fuel but high air mixture in your combustion chamber.
4. WHITE SMOKE on startup may be caused by a blown head gasket allowing coolant to enter the combustion chamber and may start dripping out of the exhaust pipes or mufflers. Smoke while riding is usually caused by worn out or damaged valves, seals, guides, pistons, rings, or cylinder walls.
5. BLACK SMOKE on startup is usually caused by too much fuel in the combustion chamber this can be due to air/fuel mixture adjustment too rich, accelerator pump improperly adjusted, faulty choke or not in the off position, air filter dirty and clogged, faulty carburetor float needle and seat, pilot jet too large, fuel injectors leaking, smoke while riding is usually caused by the main jet being too large or a damaged carburetor.
It should be noted that aggressive or abnormal throttle operation will cause these conditions to manifest themselves exponentially.

My 07 KTM 525 blows smoke and uses all the oil arter 2 hrs of riding, It was sitting for about 1 year and never used oil before


One of the disadvantages of parking a bike for such a long time. One of 2 things have happened.(Or maybe both.)
Valve stem seals have hardened.
Rings have become gummed up.
Either way you'll need to get the head and barrel off. I've heard of mixing a table spoon brake fluid with a cup of petrol and running that through the carb. I dont recommend it as I've not tried it. Rather try something like valve ease. Dont use it too often. The graphite tends to clog filters. I've also used acetone on my 4X4 but be VERY careful. Use only about a teaspoon full per litre of fuel.
