To update the garmin nuvi 205 for free, you'll first need to have your GPS, an USB cable and a computer. There are web sites that will allow you to down load an update to your GPS for free. Make sure the version you pick is compatible to your computer to download it. You'll want to plug the USB cable into both the GPS and the computer, to download the upgrade to your GPS.

Unless you have the LM model (lifetime maps) the map update will not be free. But the system software and other updates will always be free. I will attach a link to the Garmin site.

Hi,

Click here to visit the Tom Tom update page. They allow 1 free map update and afterwards it is paid. You get the map and software from that link. You connect your Tom Tom to your computer in order to update it.

You should be able to update the system software for free but not the maps. With newer Garmins they give one free map update in the first six months, after that there is a charge. On some models they have LMT or LM after the model number which means it has lifetime free map and traffic updates. The LMT models usually cost more but are cheaper than paying for map updates.
You can update your system software if you have a usb cable for it, then download Garmin updater. I will attach a link to the Garmin site.

The only time garmin give free map updates is if a new map becomes available within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites. Details of how to update your maps are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps
The only difference in getting them free or paying for them is that if you're entitled to a free update when you click on the GET UPDATE link you'll either be directed to the payments page if it's not free or to the download page if it is. The cost of a map update is approx 50 euros for a one off update or you can get a lifetime update for around 130 euros. The lifetime update is for the life of your satnav not for your own lifetime.

I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)
BUT FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOUR Garmin before you load any maps.

After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.

Unfortunately, they don't offer free map updates. You can purchase map updates for around $70, but they won't update them for free.

Also, the base model of the C330 does not have enough memory to store the entire 2008 Map Update. Unless you have more memory than it came with stock, you may have to choose which maps to include. For instance, in North America you have to choose between US and Canada - there's insufficient memory to hold both.
