Hi, this is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,

Be sure to turn off your vacuum and unplug it immediately. There is a clog at the base of the vacuum that needs to be cleared before using your vacuum again.

Start off by manually rotating the brush roll. You want to be sure you can rotate without difficulty. This will also help unearth any hidden clogs behind it. If you notice anything wrapped around the brush roll as well such as hair remove this with a razor, or a scissor.

Your vacuums belt may have come dislodged when there is a sudden clog causing the brush roll to no longer rotate. You want to be sure the belt is on there nice and tight. If its not it could be causing your vacuums motor to overwork, hence the burning smell. On average you're going to want to replace your vacuums belt every 6 months, so regardless it may be time to change it.

You can purchase replacement parts for your vacuum direct from Crucial Vacuum with free shipping and an exclusive 10% coupon for Fixya.com readers, use code: FIXYA10

Oreck vacuum cleaner stop and burn smell

sounds like hair or string or something like that is wrapped around the beater bar(the long brush under the head that brushes the carpet) keeping it from turning. The belt that drives the bar is getting hot because the beater bar is stuck.

I have a steam vac spinscrub carpet cleaner works good but it just started smelling like it was burning and started to smoke

Anytime someone says they smell something burning on any type of vacuum cleaner of carpet cleaner etc. All I can think of is the belt is rubbing on plastic which would cause the sense of something burning because you possibly are smelling the belt........

Vax v-091 burning smell and clunking noise

Is there something stuck inside, underneath, being turned along with the motor? burning smell usually means something got caught and the belt snapped. Not expensive and don't know if it's an easy DYI. Shouldn't cost too much to have it repaired or you can google the brand and model and the word belt, see what you find.

Vacuum smells like something is burning

Ok...Check the brush roll is free not sticky..Next is the belt okay, not jamming on the brush roll making the burning smell...You could take off the roll and run motor on its own ..finding out if its the motor..

There's a burning smell when I plugged it in. I read the manual and it said I must plug into the grounded outlet. I have done so and am still scared that i am smelling the burnt smell

The grounding usually doesn't have anything to do with something cooking. If this is new, take it back for replacement. If it is out of warranty, check the bottom for a locked-up brush assembly/burning drive belt (motor trying to make the brush turn). If this is so, then remove the brush assembly, pull the end bearings off (note the orientation) and clean the ends of thread, hair, and other debris. Wipe the bearing ends and clean the outer bearing interiors with a 'Q-tip'. Replace the new belt in the same manner that the original came off. Check the air passages for any plugging. Try it to see if everything is operating properly and the brush is turning.

Thr brushes are not spinning and it smells

That is your belt burning, turn the vacuum upside down and make sure your brush is spinning freely. Something may be wedged in your brush.

Self propel not working, burning smell

Flip the vacuum cleaner over and check the roller brush. Is it full of string and hair? If so, unscrew the four phillips-head screws holding the plate on that covers the roller brush; pull out the brush, and cut off/clean off all the hair and string. Replace everything and try running the vacuum. Alternate solution: perhaps the belt that makes the brush go around is broken. If so, follow the above steps to remove the roller brush, then replace the belt.

Brush does not turn when vac touches floor

You need to change the belt. The belt will not turn the brush roll and is slipping on the drive shaft. This is creating the burning smell you describe.
You say you just brought it home. From where? From repair or is this a new machine.

Burning smell and smoke

When you turn it on....is the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.
