Snapper 16 horse won't crank

I believe the red light just shows that your ignition switch is on, your problem is voltage going to the starter which is the next step. Your switch is not doing the normal ON/START as it should . If you test that voltage is going through to the starter then your starter will need service.GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

Lawn mower oil leak - snapper

If you really want to go far enough to take it apart and replace the crankcase gasket and the crank seal you would have a nice clean reliable mower. I did that kind of stuff when I was twelve so its real easy. You can make your own crankcase gasket but the crank main you would have to buy. It's a six pack and an evenings worth of work.

I have a snapper sr928 riding mower it will crank but not start up and the neg battery cable will get hot and smoke

Check battery cable connections to make sure they are all tight. It may be getting hot from trying to start for to long. Also try starting with starting fluid. If it starts with starting fluid you probably need some work done to carburetor.

Unplug the engagement clutch[it bolts to the motors crank] and try to engage again. If the fuse does'nt blow you need a clutch. If it does still blow you need a switch or you have a short in the harness.

Gene, if it is getting spark as you say, it is not "the neutral switch if it has one, (under the seat??). Or something electrical for sure"
I would be more inclined to think along the lines of a leaking valve, most likely the exhaust valve.
You don't give any information about the engine so it isn't possible to tell you anything specific about it.
If it is an OHV engine though, it could be as simple as removing the valve cover and adjusting the rocker arms to get the proper clearance
