Really what the original intended purpose was. Most times you will see the wear pattern.

On mower most v-belt idlers have the back of the belt no deeper than the outside diameter. Engine pulleys vary. If the pulley shows of the belt bottoming out in groove it either worn out, wrong pulley or wrong belt. Flat idler wear similarly just not as noticeable. Most times it is retaining lips or bearings that goes. cIt is the same v-idler when it comes to bearings.

I have a poulan riding lawnmower dont know exactly what one it is at a camp but the question i have is why does the tractor jum when you leave the clutch out especially in 3rd or4th gear.h

If the tractor lurches or jumps when you let the pedal out it could be one of a few problems. The most likely is a chunk missing out of the belt. Lower the deck all the way down and look under the chassis for the ground drive belt and inspect it. Next it could be loose or bad pulleys. If the transmission input pulley has worked loose or one of the plastic flat idler pulleys has froze up and burned a hole through it then it could be making things skip. Again with the deck all the way down lock the brake. this will slacken the belt. Reach up and grab the 2 flat idler pulleys and check that they turn free and feel for grooves worn into the flat. Grab the transmission pulley and wiggle it. Is it loose? Turn it. Does it feel chunky or smooth? Lastly, it could be a worn input shaft bushing causing the worm and pinion to slip. Especially if in your last test the trans pulley felt chunky. While the brake is locked slide the belt off the two idler pulleys so the belt stays slacked with the clutch out. Put the transmission in gear and turn the transmission pulley by hand. The tractor should start moving. Keep turning by hand and see if there is a spot that it slips. If so you will have to remove the tranny, dissect it, and replace bad parts. Input shaft bushing kit is about 50 bucks.
Hopefully its a worn belt... one last thing just came to me... check the drive pulley on the crankshaft. If the pulley is bent in a spot. Say; from trying to force a new belt on past the belt guides. Then the pinched spot will grab the belt every time it comes around cause a lurching.

Look for worn out pulleys, bearings or idler pulley spring.

What causes belt shredding on swisher pull behind mower, 44" cut, 11.5 hp

how old is your trail mower? have you checked the pulleys for the belt drive? possibly the pulleys are loose, or the shafts holding them are worn and wobbling causing a misalignment of the belt, in turn shredding the belt. also check the pulleys to make sure they are smooth, allowing the belt to move cleanly

Why traction belt keeps jumping off the pully

If the pulleys are aligned, and the bearings of the pulleys are not worn out, causing the pulleys to wobble, look at a belt that has worn out and/or stretched. Also, check and see if there is any belt adjustment by moving one of the pulleys.
Be blessed.

My Poland pro mower stop pulling while I was cutting grass the belts are not broke does it meed fluid in transmishin

There is a tensioner pulley that adjusts the belt tension, also if the belt is worn it will slip. Check it and look a how deep the belt is riding in the pulleys. The belt should ride in the pulley and have I/8 inch of the belt sticking out of the pulley.

Sears mid engine 30 inch breaks drive belts

for a belt to wear on the inside means that the pulleys are badly worn or you have the wrong section belt in use.V belts never work on the bottom of the pulleys. For a belt to operate properly the top of the belt should be just above the edge of the pulleys. For variable speed pulleys the belt should never make contact with the bottom of either pulley. Measure across the top of the flanges of the pulley and that will be the first number of the belt you require ie 14v1406 will be a 14mm wide belt and 1406 mm in circumference. or 3/8 41 will be 3/8 across the top and 41" long

1994 Dodge Caravan Serpentine fan belt will slip off pulleys if a little water is applied. All pulleys have been tested without noise. At start up and while driving a grinding noise is heard-like ball...

Take a good look at the tensioner pulley (the one with the spring) when the van isn't running. You'll notice that the belt is on the very outside edge of the pulley. Once you add water (or hit a puddle) the belt will slip off that pulley. The tensioner arm is worn and needs to be replaced. Since it's worn (the spring has become weak) it's not aligned right and is acting like a cone shaped pulley. As soon as it gets wet it wants to walk off the end.

If you take the belt off there should be a noticable line (paint worn off) on the pulley where it used to ride. Or you can look at it nearest the engine with the belt on and you should see a shiny area where it used to ride.

Hope that helps. Thanks for using FixYa.
