Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

My automatic thread cutter stopped working (it worked the one moment and just without warning stopped the next).

I vacuumed all dust out and checked to make sure no threads were stuck etc. etc.

SOURCE: "check top thread" warning, but top thread is threaded correctly

The upper thread sensor may be bad or need cleaning off but this doesn't happen very often. What does happen is that the thread regulating spring (the spring that the thread goes through just before going up to the take up lever) has come out of a small grooved piece it fits through. By taking the side cover off you should be able to see this and possibly be able to pop it back in. A tiny amount of super glue can keep it from happening again.

SOURCE: Husqvarna Sapphire - thread cutter not working

Does the metal arm come out to grab the threads to cut it? Is there a blade in the metal arm that cuts the tread? I think a standard utility knife cutter blade is the same size (just like the one that cuts the bobbin thread when you put in a new bobbin). What happens when you activate the cutter is the arm comes out, grabs the threads, brings them to the blade which cuts the threads, the velcro by the cutter holds the bobbin thread in place for the next stitch. Otherwise the thread may end up on top and the top thread would not be able to pick it up for the next stitch.

Good luck.

No real idea what has gone wrong, but first thing I would do would be to clean out the bobbin area thoroughly. There may well be a piece of lint stuck in there that is preventing the mechanism from operating. Is the cutter not working manually i.e. when you touch the cutter button, or not working at thread changes in embroidery? If it in the manual situation you might find that the button is not connecting with the electronics behind that panel correctly and it will need a machine technician to correct it.

Thread disappears up into the machine and out of the needle when using automatic thread cutter

.
  • It may be that there are quite a few thread ends in the mechanism. Remove the needle plate and pick out any detritus you may find. The cutter normally clamps down on the cut end to stop the issue you describe.
  • You are advised in the manual to use the thread cutter on threads of #30 or thicker, so it might not grip the thread once it is cut if you have thinner threads than the mechanism can cope with (or the threads are slippery)
  • If you are piecing patchwork I'd advise having a little heap of small scraps next to the machine. Then you can run onto a small scrap at the end of each seam and start the next seam without having to cut the threads each time. You work like making a string of flags and cut them off later.

I have a Pfaff grand Quilter and my top thread is not catching the bobbin thread. When it does the stitches skips. Can anyone help!?

Hello

If you have changed the needle and rethreaded the machine, then take apart your bobbin and make certain there are no small pieces of thread or lint in it. Check your tension. Do you have an automatic thread cutter? I had the same problem and it was because my automatic thread cutter was cutting the thread too short. Some how the cutter had gotten bent...I could not tell it, but it was.I put the blade of a flat head screw driver under the cutter and GENTLY bent it back down. Fixed the problem. Works perfectly.

That is your thread cutter. Depending on what machine you have, whether it is automatic thread cutter on an arm or just a manual one. If it is automatic, pop the cover off on the left top of machine next to the bobbin area. The arm should be seen there. It moves like an elbow. Push your thread cutter (scissor button) and watch how it works to see if it has come off the post. If you don't have automatic thread cutter, perhaps the thread cutter is not pushed all the way back in its place. The thread cutter looks like a triangular piece of flat razor. It could be sticking out too far or perhaps bent. I have fixed mine before, but be careful.
