How do I get the chuck off of my DeWalt DW 117 1/2" VSR Drill Serial #1229?

Open the chuck jaws and look down inside the chuck. You will see a screw head that is holding the chuck to the drill. Once you remove the screw, the chuck should pull off easily.

Need to remove chuck on new BOSCH DDS181-02 18v cordless drill. No screw evident @ bottom of chuck-only small 1/16" hole. How do I remove chuck?

There is supposed to be a Phillips head LH thread screw in the chuck. I have seen the screw head worn down so you can no longer get a screwdriver to work.
We usually cut the chuck off with a metal chop saw just at the screw - thread what remains of the chuck off, which usually leaves 1/4" of the screw sticking out of the spindle - remove with vise grips.
Its not an easy prospect when that happens.

I have a model 1689 drill press with a 33 taper jacobs chuck I need to remove the chuck to put a larger chuck on is the smaller chuck threaded on and if it is, is it RH or LH thread and how do you hold the...

you dont hold it, the chuck is a taper fit and you would need wedges to remove it. the newer chuck would also have to have the same taper to work. if replacing the new chuck you would need to make sure the parts are clean, use a brake cleaner and a paper towel to clean them and then they would press together. Let me know if you still need more assistance.

Chuck falls out of drill press

There is a long tapered hole in the spindle of the press known as a Morse taper. It holds a 6 or 8 inch morse taper arbor which is attached to the drill chuck. This is made to be removed frequently by putting a wedge shaped key into a horizontal hole in the drill press and giving it a little tap. This is for making tool change that involve removing the chuck. If you had two such tools (say two different style chucks) they would each have their own dedicated morse taper arbor. But there is also a short tapered cyclinder on the chuck end of the morse taper arbor, with a matching hole in the back of th chuck. This is not intended to come apart frequently, but it can be disassembled. I'm not sure which one is coming apart, but regardless of which one it is, you might try this fix. Clean up any bumps at all on the oustide of the taper and inside the hole with sandpaper 200 - 300 grit. Use a dowel to hold the sandpaper in the hole, and use the motor to spin it. --- JUST BE CAREFUL that if it grabs that it doesn't grab you! Once it's all cleaned up, you can you the press aspect of the drill press to seat it in place. You also might have to replace the arbor. They don't cost all that much and are available from Grizzly.com. You specify the particular taper for BOTH ends of the arbor. The long end is a Morse 2,3 or 4, and the short end is specific to the drill chuck manufacturer, like JT-2 (Jacobs chuck taper 2). Write back if you need more help.

How i remove a dewalt drill chuck Model dc988

put the drill in speed setting 1 before you continue~!

Step 1. This step loosens the screw inside the chuck. Open the chuck all the way — if you see a screw inside, it’ll need to come out before you can remove the chuck. If there’s no screw inside, you can skip steps one and two.

Step 2. If there’s a screw inside the chuck, typically the threading will be left-handed, so turn it clockwise to remove it. Be careful, and use the right size screwdriver — you don’t want to strip the screw.
step-2.gif Step 3. Insert the largest hex key that you have into the chuck, short-side-in, and tighten the chuck. Tap the hex key sharply in a counterclockwise direction to loosen the chuck. Now you can remove it by hand.
step-3.gif This won’t work for every consumer drill ever made, but pretty close. Most drills will match one of two common chuck-threading standards: 3/8′-24 threaded mount for 3/8′-capacity drill chucks, and 1/2′-20 threaded mount for 1/2′-capacity drill chucks — but on some drills just the opposite may occur. To be safe, always check the thread count before you buy a replacement drill chuck.

Put the screw back in the chuck, tighten it up then back it out 1 turn. Take a punch, put it in the chuck and give it a quick hit with a hammer. That should do the trick.
