How do I get pulley/pump balancer off motor going to a DeVilbiss pro 4000 air compressor. Pump went bad and putting another type pf pump on.

We are going to use another pump and not the one that came with this compressor but can't get the pulley off, is there a trick, a special tool or what?

I've used a pickle fork, or ball joint separator fork and work it off, hammer the fork to push the wheel off. Penetrating lube helps. I would have got a pump with a wheel already on it in case the existing one is different. If you want, you can saw off the old pump shaft off and then punch the remaining shaft off the wheel, support the wheel center part for this.

Use a puller. Find one or rent one for no cost at auto zone or Oreillys. Requires a deposit with money back after return.

Will an electric motor with more horsepower and more rpm hurt a compressor pump?

Electric motors seem to turn around 1125 rpm or 3600 rpm. The pulley size on the motor and pump must be adjusted to achieve the desired result without overheating /loading the motor. I have seen pumps turning from 800 to 1200 rpm using different pulley size on motor, motor hp and motor rpm. Some brands will turn same pump from 1200 to 3600 rpm depending on if was electric or gas motor. This will certainly shorten the life of the pump but will most likely work. Most turn an average of 1200 rpm for good balance of long life and good supply of air. Pump rpm is usually limited to the power of the motor. Cost effective match of 1.5 hp motor will turn pump about 1000 - 1200 rpm for about 5cfm. Rol Air 2hp motor turns 2 cyl pump about 1100 rpm for 10 cfm. Good luck

Can you put a bigger Hp and a smalll plully onit

There are quite a few variations of motor and pulley combinations. You can change the motor and pulley based on your needs, however do not over-clock the recommended rpm or the pump. Check the specifications of the pump to determine the max rpm . Usually the pulley on the motor will depend on the rpm of the motor. Check the rpm of the present motor to determing the rpm of the pump with current set-up, and compare to the motor you are considering. Motor rpm vary from around 850 to 3450 so pulley size is quite important. Good holidays

One dealer for your model compressor is Northern. They are very good at replacement parts. If you do not have 3 phase power, you could shop around for 5 to 7 hp 220 v motor making sure that the motor mount will align with your plate. Pully size depends on dia. of pulley on the pump. Most pumps turn between 550 min to 1100 rpm depending on the power available and cfm requirements. Most motors turn at 1725 rpm so for example if your compressor has a 14 in. pulley then you motor will need a 5 in. pulley to turn it about 620 rpm. The larger the pulley at the motor the higher cfm produced but more amps used. Motor speed x pulley dia. divided by compressor pulley dia. To obtain more efficiency and highest cfm you will need 3 phase. Good place to see motors and two piece pulley combnations is www.grainger.com. Good luck

Motor pulley for an old Ingersoll Rand type 30 compressor

Hi,
Here is a link to Ingersoll-Rand (compressed air division) where you can find a local distributor. I think a call to a parts tech might provide the original motor sheave outside diameter and belt size (I'm suspecting "A" or "B" size).

http://www.ingersollrandproducts.com/contact/air/index.aspx

With that info, here is a link to a good industrial source for your new motor sheave (McMaster-Carr):

http://www.mcmaster.com/#v-belt-sheaves/=3fwz7b

Their prices aren't so bad.
You may also have a local industrial sales in your area.
I hope this helps you... Nice compressor!

Ford 302 in E-150 is turning all drive belts into dental floss

Here are a few choices. If equipped with A/C the air could ice up the compressor and stop the a/c clutch, shredding a belt. Width of belt pulley, if narrow pulley has fat belts and fat pulley has narrow belts, then possible to shred. Has anyone cranked down the damper on the crankshaft? If the bolt comes loose or the woodruff key is worn you could get a wobble from the crank.
