Trust Me ...I am an electrician. There is no way (legally) to do what you want to do with the wiring that exists. One of two things can happen at this point...1) rewire the switch leg with 3 wire cable (Type NM-B aka Romex with 3 conductors + ground). This involves some skill and maybe some drywall repair. OR 2) buy a remote control for your ceiling fan. They sell them at most home improvement stores, and they install fairly easily in the motor housing of your ceiling fan. The transmitter runs off of batteries, and doesn't require special wiring to operate. Your wall switch will have to remain ON for you to operate, but the remote can handle the rest, like dimming your lights and fan speed control. Good luck!

Hunter ceiling fan/light unit install with 3 pole switches. there are 2 white, 2 black and one orange wires coming out of the electrical box. How do i handle the installation?

Not understanding, three pole switch is a wrong switch, wires in the ceiling or wall electric box.
Needed: What switch is existing and what wires are in the switch box and runs or groups in each run coming in as wire groups. Same for ceiling box, colors and wires in each run coming in.
Basically, remove the existing ceiling fixture and connect the ceiling fan replacing the fixture to the same wires the fixture was connected to. White to white, green or bare to green or bare, colored wire to fan's blue and black. Wired like this one switch controls both fan and light, on and off at same time. Use fan pull chain switch for individual fan or light control.

House wireing red, white, black. how do i hook up a cealingfan with light kit pull chain on.

For starters, look at the wall switch. Are there two switches? If so, connect the black wire from the ceiling box to the black wire from the fan. Connect the red wire from the ceiling box to the blue wire from the fan. Connect white to white. At the fan, usually the black wire goes to the fan and the blue wire goes the the light.

If there is only one wall switch, you may or may not want to install a double switch so the fan and light can be controlled separately. If there is only one wall switch, most people just connect the wire connected to that switch (usually the black) to both the black and blue from the fan, not using the red at all. In that scenario both the light and the fan are switch at the fan as needed after the wall switch is operated.

Installing the extra red wire is not usual practice, someone actually was planning for future use and convenience.

The key seems to be that you changed wiring in the ceiling box.

I suggest you make a drawing of the wires before and after. Track the route that the Hot wire takes.

The key question is this: Does Hot wire from breaker box arrive in the ceiling box first? Or does it arrive in wall box first?

I think Hot from breaker arrives in wall box first. And from there Hot wire goes to ceiling box ... and from ceiling box the hot wire goes to other plugs in room. If this is true, you will be one wire short for installing fan control switch.

I always make a drawing of existing wires before starting, so I can put it back the way it was. It sounds like you got a good handle on which wire goes where.

We used to solve the one-wire-short problem by making a simple project bigger. Figure out which direction ceiling joist run. See if you can slide fish line from fan ceiling box over to wall. If that works. Over at the wall, chop small hole in ceiling so you can feed wire up to fish line. Pull wire over to ceiling box. Next, staple other end of wire along ceiling over to location above wall box. Chop another small hole so you can feed wire down to wall box. And then install beautiful crown molding to hide the mess, and paint the room so you need new furniture.

I have a two wire (black white) ceiling wiring and the surveyor fan has four - black white blue and green. How can I connect so that the wall unit can control speeds and light turns off and on without...

When you only have two wires in the ceiling , that means that you have only one switch for this fan. The green connects to all green and bare wires and to the mounting bracket .. the white to white .. and the ceiling black connects to the fan black and blue wires .. In this installation the fan and light can be controlled independently with the pull chains
In order to have indipendent control at the wall you would need two switches and another wire going from the switch to the fan/light

Wiring a ceiling fan w/light

To add to red54's comments:

This is what I believe you have:

- one source in the ceiling box (black & white)

- one donwline circuit in ceiling box going to another wall/ceiling box (black&white)

- on switch wire in ceiling box coming from your wall switch (black & white) -- this is the white wire which will be hot when the switch is truned on

Here's how it should be connected:

- all 3 blacks in ceiling box connected together -- no other wires in this bundle

- white wire (which is hot when switched) coming from switch connects to the black/blackwhite fan wires

- connect all reamining white wires together in bundle

- connect all ground wires together

It's that simple. Trick is figuring out, of the three cables in the ceiling box, which is source, which is downline, which is switch.
Maybe red54's procedure can help you figure that out.

Ceiling fan and light wiring, 2 switches, 1 romexHunt

If you have only one black and one white in the ceiling to connect the fan / light to , then you have only one switch for this ceiling box. The fan / light will connect the white wires together and then the two colored wires on the fan to the black ceiling wire. In order to use separate switches for the fan and the lighht a 4 wire cable must go from the switches to the light so you have a red and black wire to switch the two separately .

blue would be your earth.
black and white are phase and neutral.

for the wiring in your roof you need to call a local sparky. just ask which is which and connect them appropriately.

Ceiling Fan Electric

hi,
you may have two dedicated ceiling fan circuits coming out of that box, check to make sure theres not a black wire bunched up in the ceiling or cut off, or try this

1.white to white wires, and black wire and black with a white stripe to red wire out of ceiling for fan and light together operation

2. If you can find the black and the red and the white coming out of the ceiling then you may have two switches on the wall for that fan, red for black fan wire, black with white stripe for the to black out of the ceiling , white all together. try that combination
for separate light and fan control from the wall

good luck, and be careful

One black wire on the switch hooked to the black sources wire. The other black wire on the switch hooked black up to the fan. The green on the switch wire goes to the bare wire. If there is bare wire you can use the white wire.

Wiring ceiling fans to wall switch

Hi Bigelow,

You need two switches.  It sounds like the Electrician set up the junction box for two circuits(Lights and Fans).  i say this because your supply has 4 wires, Red , Black, White and Bare. We may be able to oversome this with one Lutron Switch. Allow me to investigate, and I will be back.
