A screw or something else is in the printer not allowing the gear to move freely.

When I go to print or copy the machine makes a loud clicking noise and then says paper jam. Brother MFC - 8460 N

Hello,
The loud clicking noise is either the toner cartridge or the paper feed. If the jam occurs in the drum and toner cartridge then I recommend changing the toner.
If the paper is not being fed at all then you need to have the paper feed kit replaced.
Thanks,
Pat

I have a epson artisan 800 I'm tring to fax from the automatic feeder but it keeps making a grinding sound and then it says paper jam but paper never even went through

I took apart my artison 800 with 'paper jam' error and grinding noise. Sadly enough, it is the plastic gear attached to the stepper motor which is slipping and making the grinding noise. I tried to glue it and it worked once or twice and failed again. It is a design flaw and Epson should repair this for free if they are honest about this problem. Ir is not a user-caused problem.

Brother MFC-9420CN Paper Jam Error message w/ loud grinding noiz

please try this

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
  3. Also open the back cover of the printer if this model has one.
  4. Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
  5. If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it away from light/ sun light to avoid damaging it.
  6. If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
  7. If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though. Do this step especially if the jam message comes up repeatedly without any obvious paper jam, there may be a small tear of paper inside.
  8. Ones the printer is free of paper Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
  9. If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.
  10. see alternative if the problem is still not solved.

alternative :
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

Printer will not work. Error E3

What may have happened is that the Paper sensor is locked down and tells the printer that there is paper in the path (although there isn't any). The paper sensor is a toggle switch and there is a paddle that pushes it down as the paper goes in/out. Look on the right side of the unit ,under the roller assembly. Sorry, but I do not have a service manual for this unit.

Error list :

E2-2 = No paper (ASF)
E3-3 = Paper jam
E4 = No ink
E5-5 = The ink cartridges are not installed or a non-supported ink cartridge is installed, or the ink cartridges are not installed properly
E8 = Waste ink absorber full, or platen waste ink absorber full
E9 = The connected digital camera / video camera does not support Camera Direct Printing
E14 = The Ink cartridges whose destination are wrong
E15 = Ink cartridge is not installed E16 - Ink remaining is unknown
E16 -E19 = Failed to scan head alignment sheet
E22 = Carriage error
E23 = Paper feed error
E24 = Purge unit error
E25 = ASF(cam) sensor error
E26 = Internal temperature rise error
E27 = Waste ink absorber full or platen waste ink absorber full
E28 = Ink cartridge temperature rise error -
E29 = EEPROM error
E33 = Paper feed position error
E35 15 = USB Host VBUD overcurrent error - USB
E37 17 = Abnormal motor driver error
E40 20 = Other hardware error
E42 22 = Scanner error

Paper jam 71

Paper jam 71 is an error that occurs when a driver on the controller board (IC-28) begins to wear out, or the timing gets thrown off. This causes one paper feed motor to drag the other one. This error is normally accompanied by a loud grinding noise because of this. Kodak's newest firmware version is supposed to fix the problem. If that has no effect then the fix is to replaced the controller board.

Good luck.

Paper Jam...grinding noise

The print head lock is probably not retracting. Look for the white plastic block that pokes through from the paper feed side just in front of the head. Push it in with your finger and move the head to the middle by hand. Now turn the machine on. Then turn it off using the correct method. Then turn it on once more. If it starts grinding again, you screwed the feed mechanism when tugged out the jammed paper (probably pulled it backward through the feed instead of making it go forward and out the correct exit). If this is the case, you may as well bin it. If it in warranty, you can try to get a claim for repair.

Paper transport does not work; terrible grinding noise

I took mine apart from the back and put it back together and it worked. It is probably due to moving it and the bottom paper tray alignment gets out of whack. I inspected all of the gear train and didn't find any worn or missing teeth. I suspect a paper jam started it and the user turned the printer around to open the back door. Since the handles are on the printer the tray doesn't move with it which allows it to separate and possibly jam a pickup drive gear.
