Using Password Phrases For Better Security

Did you know that Windows supports using passwords of up to 127 characters? I don’t use passwords anymore, and I haven’t for years. I’ve switched to using password phrases instead.
Why do I use password phrases?
  • Why would you want to remember a password like 2%d7as$d when you could just remember a sentence like “nsync sucks giant monkey balls” or “I hate my ex-wife!” or “Holy hell does this job ****!”
  • You can use uppercase, lowercase, special characters, or even spaces… but you are using them in context, which makes it much more natural to remember.
  • Post-it notes on your monitor are not secure. Sorry.
  • Even the most efficient forms of password cracking, using pre-computed rainbow tables, will never be able to crack a password with 20 or more characters.
These days, windows passwords can be cracked in no more than a few seconds. If somebody can get physical access to your machine, they can boot off one of the hacker tool cds available all over the internet, and they will typically have your password in seconds, if they know what they are doing.
Even with brute force cracking, there is no possible way that you can crack a password that long. Even if somebody had the super computing power to do so, hopefully you change your password every few months or so.
It may be difficult to use password phrases on other operating systems, or especially on websites, because they don’t properly handle spaces in the password, or have a small password length limit. One of the tricks that I usually do is use a password phrase without the spaces, if I possibly can.
So go change your password now

I have lost the bios password... any body help me to recover without opening case

This is a tricky one because the BIOS password is made to be the hardest password on a computer to break. Some manufacturers allow you to enter BIOS without the BIOS password but most do not. Here are some troubleshooting methods starting with the easiest and moving on to the hardest.

To enter BIOS hit the F2 key repeatedly as the computer boots up. You should enter BIOS after the first loading screen. If this does not send you into BIOS, try the ESC, DEL, and F1 keys. Once in BIOS find where you can set the password and reset it or enter a blank password as your new password.

If you can't access BIOS or are prompted for a password once you enter BIOS, try the following methods to flush the BIOS password cache:
1. Contact your manufacturer's support and ask if they have a backdoor BIOS password that they will allow you to use. This works to allow you to enter that password instead of your own and easily fixes the whole problem, but not all companies will tell you their password. You can also do a google search for your manufacturer's backdoor BIOS password since many of them have been discovered.
2. Send your laptop to your manufacturer to have them reset the password manually, although this takes an undisclosed amount of time and they will often make you pay a fee if you are not under warranty.
3. If you don't want to pay your manufacturer, open your laptop and locate the motherboard. On the motherboard there is a CMOS battery, if you don't know where this is use your PC manual. Remove the CMOS battery for an hour and then place it back on the motherboard. This should reset the password. After this turn on your computer and enter BIOS. This will reset all your BIOS settings so it may take a few minutes to open. After it is open, just exit BIOS and everything should be working properly. Just be very careful when opening the laptop and handling the CMOS battery because you can severely damage your laptop if you don't handle it properly.

Thanks for using FixYa and good luck!
