Question about Refrigerators
If you are referring to the the ice auger assembly in a dispenser type refrigerator, that unit is driven by a motor behind the ice bucket. It may be frozen up or could be completely burned out and my need replaced.

SOURCE: Ice maker arm issue
If you are a real DIY'er, remove the ice maker from the frig and see if the arm has or had a spring return down or check its position with the cam that operates it as it goes around.

You may have a broken icemaker and needs to be replaced. The internal parts are solid state electronics and they can break.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a Whirlpool
Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly
Often ice maker issues are a symptom of an automatic defrosting problem OR a leaking (dripping / bypassing) ice maker water valve.
First off you should try and prove that there are no un-necessary water leakages by doing the following:
1. Turn the icemaker OFF
2. Remove the plastic line where it connects to the thru the cabinet water tube by pinching the clamp and pulling down on the plastic tube.
3. Place end of the plastic tube into a bucket for about 12 hours. At the end of 12 hours check the bucket for ANY water. If there is a noticable amount of water (more than 1 oz) the water valve is leaking water by the valve diaphram seat. The only remedy for this is to change the units water valve assy.
As far as a possible automatic defrosting problem..... soft ice cream is a symptom along with that of low ice production.
The evaporator coils get a substantial amount of ice build up on them and then the airflow in the freezer compartment is restricted resulting in a change in the freezer comprtment temp. If you do have an automatic defrosting problem you will soon notice noise from the evaporator fan as the ice build up encroaches into the fan blade path. Additionally the fresh food compartment will warm up.
The ice maker will not cycle until it reaches 16 to 15 deg F. The ice maker harvest cycle is started when the ice maker thermostat closes and advances the ice maker module.
Do the water in the bucket test and then look for signs of ice build up on the evaporator coils.
If neither of the above manifest / present then download this manual and follow the troubleshooting procedures:

This ice maker can be cycled manually to help determine the problem. To
cycle this ice maker, pull the front cover off of the ice maker. You
will now have access to the module which has some test terminals marked
on it (I'm sending you a picture). Using a well insulated jumper, place
it between T-H and the ice maker should start to cycle.
Be careful this is a hot (live) check. If the ice maker starts, after about 5 seconds remove the jumper. It will take a few minutes for it to break the ice free and if it cycles completely and refills the ice maker will need to be replaced. This indicates it's not starting on its own. If it just stops on the ice, the mold heater may be open. You should be able to feel the bottom of the ice maker to see if it's getting warm but be careful, if you touch the mold heater, it can be very hot. If the mold heater is not hot, again the ice maker will need to be replaced. If the ice maker never cycles with the jumper, there may not be any voltage getting to the ice maker. Some voltage checks will need to be made and a technician will be needed to make these checks.
Hope this helps.

Tips for a great answer:

Check the ice storage container. The
ice dispenser will not dispense ice until the first supply ice has dropped into
the ice storage container.Remove excess ice from the back of the
ice container. Make sure ice cubes are not jammed between the ice maker and the
back of the ice container.
auger won't engage or turn
to dispense ice.Remove the ice bucket and with a hair dryer warm up
the inside where the fork is that turns the auger in the bucket and try it and
if this does not help then you will have to replace the auger motor ,, chances
are the motor is just froze up .--------
If there is nothing jammed then try this./Remove the ice bin out.And then clean the ice bin.
Rotate the auger with your hand.If its hard then there is problem with auger motor. If the auger is not rotating fine then its faulty auger motor or the auger motor is frozen,if you notice ice getting collected there.
Take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the auger motor for few minutes.Take care you dont blow hot air continuously.
But if that is not helping then disconnect auger motor connecting wire wait for 2 minutes clean the connector and reconnect the connector back and see.If that is not helping at all. Then, replace the auger motor.
