That is a print head calabration fault. 99 percent chance the print head has failed. That would require replacing hte print head.
That is a common problem on the 8500. Look for a dealer in your area if you want to repair is. Xerox will charge over $200 to show up and $750 for the print head.

What you can try is shut down the Machine and unplug the powercord and unscrew the cable next to the powercord.
It's from the scanner.
after that reconnect both cable's and turn it back on.
and it should be fixed

this is a scanner problem that can be associated with the scanner lock under the scanner bed. make sure the lock is in the 'unlocked' position. it is easy to move this when lifting the scanner bed to reload the ink blocks. if this does not solve the problem you may have to replace the scanner assembly. hope this helps.
