Although Jay Plesset is wrong about the alternator powering the ignition system you won't be able to run it without the magnets and the alternator due fact the electric PTO will quickly drain your battery as you no longer will providing the charging of the system.

Now there is a pair of magnets that operates the magneto but they cast into the flywheel and I have never had them to come loose or break so I am assuming that you are referring to the ones inside the flywheel.

It's unlikely that it will run without the magnets. They power the spark.

It is a magneto system so the alternator does NOT power the Spark. The magmets that power the magneto I have never seen them to break loose as they are cast into the flywheel itself.

SOURCE: I have a lx 255 john deere wont start

You have a defective ignation coil. When the engine gets hot, the winding in the coil opens and the engine stops. After it cools down, it will again make contact and start again. If you don't know where the coil is, follow the wire from the spark plug. The spark plug wire is attached to the coil from the factory. It's easy to replace with a 1/4 inch socket set. Set the magnet to coil gap with a standard business card.

SOURCE: John Deere Lawn Tractor LX176. Battery discharge

Locate voltage regulator above battery to the left as you sit on machine, its behind frame that supports steering wheel.Once you have found it use a light to shine on harness and follow the brown wire that leads into regulator. The plastic around that wire should not be burnt or showing any other color. The LX series machines had a problem with brown wire coming loose and causing the charging light to stay on.Remove plug from reg and use small screwdriver to clean out wire and work it a little so it makes good contact.

JD gx345 not charging with engine running

Remove flywheel and check the 4 magnets are still glued in place on the inside of the flywheel. If any of the magnets are loose or two are unglued from the flywheel the voltage will only be slightly above 12v
instead of closer to 14 something volts. The magnets will still be inside and maybe stuck to the coils. Re-glue with JB weld or similar type of two part epoxy. Magnets should be glued around the inside of the flywheel-equally spaced with alternating polarities.

I have a john Deere stx38 yellow deck Kohler motor does this mower have any fuses that has anything to do with getting fire

Hello I'm wade No it doesn't! It is all ran by key switch. If you can remove air filter and spay starting fluid in engine if it starts then you having fuel delivery problem. Fuel shut-off solenoid usually sticks not causing fuel to get into engine and that solenoid is what kills the engine when key gets turned off. If you have any further question I'm here to help. this could be a engine timing problem this model should have a 17.5 hp kohler engine , now kohler's are now famous for having coil problems cus of overheating it and the other cause could be if you reciently shocked this engine hard (Heavy load) sometimes the flywheel pully (iron thing on top) comes loose or you shear the keyway on shaft anyways ck out my youtube video on easy way to change kohler coil for help doing this (all you need is 6 mm wrench , two hands and a playing card)

How do I find the model or year on 38" John Deere with no hood?

A ten year old mower that probably cost about $1500.00 at least twn years ago that has not been taken care of is not worth much.

John Deere is a good name as in Kohler. How much is it worth? It is currently worth what you paid for it, you just made it worth that much.
