HP Scanjet5900 OS Windows 7 Home Premium Image Software Photoshop CS 4 It's and old scanner, but has been a great one. Nice and LARGE. Never needing any maintenance other than wiping the screen, when suddenly all the images it scans have an all over red cast to them. Is the bulb about shot, would you say? I haven't changed any settings in Photoshop. I've experimented with different settings on the scanner itself, but I still get the red cast.

This looks like a CCD failure. Can the image be corrected in the PC software Which image editor are you using?
SOURCE: Scanner problem
First try a hard reset. Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on an HP Scanjet Scanner.
1. Disconnect all cables from the scanner.
2. Lock and unlock any carriage lock.
3. Place the scanner on a flat and level surface.
4. Wait at least 5 seconds after disconnecting the cables before re-connecting any cables for testing or troubleshooting.
If the bulb is indeed fused, you will need to get the device serviced. This cannot be done by yourself, as the lamps are not sold separately..You can contact HP here:

Try a different copy of OS or in a Different M/C.
SOURCE: scanner gives poor quality scan...bulb?
I have one with the same problem. Look at the lamp. If it isn't really bright, that could be the cause. Mine is bright at one end and that is the side of the page that is good. I am not an expert so I could be wrong, but that is where to start if all else looks OK. Am looking for a cheap replacement lamp myself. But at the prices of all-in-ones, it's not worth spending much.
SOURCE: Epson Artisan 800 Scanner leaves blue/grey stripe on side.
I had this exact same issue with two Artisan 800's. I was told it was a hardware issue. Both were returned under warranty to Epson. Have since had problems with ADF and that printer was returned. Warranty has now ended. Expecting to buy a new printer shortly: they last about 4 months before having problems. It won't be an Epson even though that's all I've owned for 10 years
