Does a Goodman DSXC180601 5-ton A/C unit require a hard start? System has a TXV. I have been told hard starts could void the warranty

Hard starts are not mandatory but they do help to save the compressor if it is having a hard time starting
its just a boost to help it start
and it shouldn't void your warranty they are to help it start nothing else

3 ton heat pump with piston in air handler. After unit shuts down it makes loud fluid flow noise for about 2 minutes

adding a tvx will not help. the sound you here is the pressure equalizing and that has got to happen for the compressor to start again the next time. A tvx will give you a higher efficiency because it can adjust to changing temperature conditions. Only way i know to quiet the noise is to try to insulate the lines better.

Will goodman outdoor ac work with bryant indoor unit

This is true as long as it is not a heat pump. Make sure they replace the piston (metering device to match the outdoor units required piston size. Or if the indoor coil is metered via TXV, it will automatically meter the refrigerant flow. If you are mismatching a system, make sure an acid test is performed on the old refrigerant and take appropriate measures with the new system if the test shows positive acid. They need to definitely install a liquid line drier.

Ineed info on changing a expansion valve ona split a/c unit

If indoor coil TXV then start by pumping system down-while system is running in the cool mode close discharge line valve at outdoor unit (the small line) watch low pressure side of gauges as needle falls start closing the other valve idealy u want valve completely closed around the same time the PSI reaches "0" and kill power at disconnect by unit at the same time. Now your refrigerant is in the outdoor unit. However if TXV was completely closed off you may have refrigerant between the TXV and outdoor unit in the little line in which case that would have to be recovered into a cylinder. Now you can remove old TXV also remove filter drier if is one and install new one just before TXV either way this is to catch any trash or moisture left in system. Next pull a vacuum on the system perferably down to 500 microns if not pull for 45min close gauges and let sit 10min or so and see that needle doesnt rise if it does u have a leak find leak and repair start process over. Its best if u have nitrogen or CO2 to put some pressure on lines before pulling vacuum upto about 100PSI and bubble soap joints see that pressure doesnt drop then release pressure and start vacuum once vacuum complete open valves on outdoor unit.(do not remove hoses from lines until valves opened or u loose vacuum and have to start over) reconnect power and check charge by subcooling method add or remove refrigerant if needed. ADD:if u have to braze TXV in then wrap it with a wet rag so it doesnt get to hot and damaged.

2 ton condensing unit w/ 3 ton evap 100 suction 175 discharge

Hi,
The orifice or the expansion valve are for a three ton unit and you only have a 2ton...so too much gas is going through causing low discharge and high suction... install correct orifice or TXV and you'll be okay...

3 ton condensor and 2.5 air handler

I hate to use rules of thumb but 500sqft per ton depending on your windows and insulation. you are probably ok with a 2.5 ton however it will not work with a 3 ton outdoor unit as you have figured out. depending on how long that ac has been in you may want to replace it with a 2.5 ton due to the damage to the compressor valves because of the mis match. or if the indoor is newer and the original system may have been a 3 ton then i would replace the A/H. and be prepared to replace the outdoor if the valves are to far gone. If the trane is a new high effiency 2 and the goodman is just a 10 SEER you may be able to have a txv installed on the trane unit and a kickstart device outside. but only if its a high effiency but their again if the A/C fails you couldnt have a high effiency 3 ton you would have to drop down to 2.5,

I just had a bryant a/c installed (txv) should it have a hard start kit as well.

Anytime you have TXV they do need a hard start kit. The TXV shut down on the off cycle and does not allow unit to equalize. Rusty

Tell them you want a whole new outside system or a new compressor . Around here, the compressor change out should be around 5--$800.00 and the unit change out , around $400.00! OKLAHOMA.

How do you install the txv valve for a 13 seer r-22 goodan system an do i need to install a hard start kit with it

Due to EPA regulations and the complex tools and equipment, I will suggest that you call a EPA licensed technician to do this job. The following is the basic outline of what will be required of this technician.

To install the TXV valve, all of the freon must be recovered from the system. The copper lineset at the indoor unit will then need to be cut open. Since the lines are no longer sealed and have been exposed to the air, filter dryers(s) should be brazed in. After the TXV is brazed in, the system needs to be placed into a vacuum per EPA (to verify no leaks). At that point the old refrigerant may be put back in to the system if it is still OK..

The hard start is really unrelated to the TXV operation. It is not necessary to do this job. Although it does not hurt to install one. Basically the hard start will lower the start/run amperage of the compressor. These are usually used in a "tight" compressor scenarios.

I hope this helps:)

If the person who does this is not licensed by the EPA, the penalties could be horrific. Be warned.
