How do i set the timing on a 33 inch craftsman walk behind mower?

There is not an actual adjustment for the timing. If the sheer key on the flywheel has sheered a bit, this will cause the timing to be off. This happens if you hit something with the blades. You would have to remove the starter housing, flywheel bolts and flywheel. remove sheered key and install new.

What are common causes of flywheel key breakage?

Incorrect valve adjustment, especially on OHV motors that causes a backfire can cause the sheer pin to break. Obviously this saves the motor from worse damage. Also, sudden stops caused by hitting something like a log or stump with engaged blades have broken the pins before. On an older motor I had one sheer because the piston rod was a little loose off the crank and the slop was causing the motor to bind. Obviously this did internal damage but the sheer momentum of the motor spinning a heavy flywheel no suddenly stopping broke the pin. Lastly, the magnets on the flywheel could be hitting the coil pack, binding up causing the pin to snap. Be sure to check if the space is gapped correctly. And don't buy cheap pins or generic pins. There should be no slop whatsoever. You almost have to pound it into the slot. Slop equals a much high ER chance of breaking for no reason at all.

Flywheel keys keep going and going out of time

This is not a dryer question. A flywheel that has spun and sheered the keyway will require re machining. There is supposed to be in interference fit between the flywheel and the shaft and the key only helps retain the position. The key is soft to allow for serious trauma, but if the flywheel spins by much, it will fit too loose.

My son hit a log with my js25 walk behind mower now it won't run.

He more than likely sheered the key in the crankshaft. When the key bends or breaks it throws the timing off and the engine will not start. The key is there to prevent damage to the crankshaft when you hit an object. You will need to remove the engine cover and then use a puller to remove the flywheel. Where the flywheel connects to the crankshaft you will see the key which is either broken or bent. All you do is buy a new one and replace it.

Flywheel keeps sheering the key after about 5 seconds of run time

The bearings on the alternator, or the end bearing on the engine, is likely seized. Engine tries to overcome, but ends up shearing the key. You might also be using the wrong replacement key as well.

Shearing of flywheel pin on starting 12 hp snapper

When you the key this time, put the flywheel on first then the key but this time use a little grit between the flywheel and crankshaft. Something like grinding compound. It will keep the flywheel from moving plus make sure you torque down the flywheel nut good.
Good Day.
