If its an outboard it is probably the rectifier. If you hooked up the battery backwards it will have blow the rectifier. You can check you should have AC coming off the yellow wires and dc coming off the red wire and ground. If your tach does not work that may also indicate a blown rectifier.

Hi Randy.
There is a number of things that could cause a motor not to run,
I'd start with fresh fuel / make sure that it has spark.
The three things that make any motor run ( spark fuel and compression.)
Good luck.......

Hi i just bot a bass boat with a 40 hp mercury motor that has ben sitting up for 8 or ten years. so what should i do before i try to start it again because it wont start at all

First know that they have a neutral safety switch which will stop the motor from spinning if the gear is engaged. so put it in neutral first.

Second- will it even go round? take the hood off and try to spin it by hand. Just to see if it is free. If it is stuck, check the lower unit oil for a lot of rust and water. That will stop it too.

Next - charge or change the battery,

Take the spark plugs out and see if there is any compression, or are there metal pieces found on the spark plug?

Then- or first- buy a book on your motor and a general book on boating.

Practice un-tying the boat and moving it off the trailer at home so you don't look like a novice at the ramp.

After 5 years the water pump should be serviced- use a garden hose and flush attachment or trash can full of water when running it at home- don't forget to put oil in the gas.

Boat motor won't start. battery fully charged

I would have the battery tested anyway to make sure you don't have a dead cell. Usually even with a weak battery the starter will try to engage the flywheel on top of the motor.Besides the battery check the fuse located on the motor. If all is good then you can remove the starter for testing and possible rebuilding.

Starter motor wont work evinrude 50hp 2cyl

Sometimes there is a switch which prevents the starter from working in gear. This switch could be out of adjustment. Otherwise you need to check for a bad relay by jumping the one you can find and seeing if the starter will turn. Check the grounding on the motor too.

Outboard motor charging systems, do they exist or do i need to periodicly charge the battery for my boat

Look at your ID plate and get the model number of your motor. Then contact the Johnson dealer and see if your model comes with a charger, be it alternator or magneto. Many use systems similar to riding lawnmowers and they do not need charging.

Mercury outboard over charging

Your motor is fine. It needs to put out more than 12 volts or the battery will not charge. Most alternators put out between 13 - 17 volts, so this is well within the range.
