Try a new needle
rethread the machine-use every thread guide
make sure the bobbin isn't bent, or warped
make sure the bobbin is wound correctly
make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly and turned correctly in the bobbin case
it's also possible that there could be a timing problem with the machine, and it would have to be check at a sewing machine shop

SOURCE: Feed Dogs, Thread Tangle

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to www.singer-featherweight.com and check out what they have available.

I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at robbie1949@comcast.net for more information.

Thanks!

Robbie

SOURCE: bobbin thread won't catch

I've just had this exact problem with my model 2037. The problem, according to 3 shops I've taken mine to, is that the shuttle hook (the metal piece that the bobbin sits in) is broken and needs replaced. Problem is, the piece is next to impossible to find.

SOURCE: Bernette 82e model will not feed bottom thread

Possibly you have the bobbin back in upside down and its turning the wrong way. Happens all the time. If you mean it will not pick up the bottom thread then maybe the needle is in backwards or the machine is out of time. I doubt you will have to replace a part but if it does or you need to have the timing adjusted you will have to maybe look at the Yellow Pages or here online and find the nearest sewing machine repair or dealership and have them look at it.
Good luck

I believe you have a broken gear. These are difficult to repair on your own.

Bobbin not feeding top thread

Be sure to install a brand new needle. Check that it is threaded correctly (top and bobbin).

If it still will not pick up the bobbin thread, it may have a timing issue, ie the needle is arriving at the bobbin at the wrong time in order to intercept the bobbin thread. You can search the internet for web sites and videos dealing with sewing machine timing or take it for service.

Thread keeps winding around my bobbin holder. What could I be doing wrong?

Misthreading, most likely. Take all the thread off and out of the machine and clean the machine, especially around the feed dog and bobbin case areas. Rethread from scratch, remembering to thread the upper part of the machine with the presser foot up, and make sure the bobbin is sitting in the bobbin case right way around. Fetch up the bobbin thread and hold it and the top thread end together behind the presser foot while you take the first few stitches of the seam.

Singer - 241-12, bobbin thread not stitching

I have a 241-12 Singer. New to me. It was running great. Then the bobbin thread ran out. Put in one prewound bobbin that came with it, even though the bobbin appeared different. The bobbin thread didn't feed and the machine jammed up. I finally wound the old bobbin and put it in. It will only feed about 6" of thread before the bobbin thread breaks. It becomes so tight I can't get it to feed. Both bobbins will not feed. However I don't believe it's the bobbin tension because thread will pull through fine when pulled manually (if it hasn't been in the machine yet). What am I doing wrong?

JUKI BOBBIN THREAD WILL NOT FEED

Most machines require that the bobbin in the case unspool in a certain direction its considered common knowledge I guess because it doesn't seem to be written in the text of manuals... but is indicated in the photos. make sure it's unspooling correctly.

Secondly. Please make sure you have the correct needle for your machine. Some machines do not use a 15x1 (most common needle) Let me show you. (see photo below) Clearly the 241x1 won't fit into your machine. BUT the 15x1 will go into the machine that requires the 20x1.... and the result is it won't pick up the bobbin thread.

Start there. Then check your timing.

When I turn the knob to move the needle to catch the bobbin thread, it hits something underneath and won't keep going down. The same thing happens when I turn the knob in either direction. It's...

Have you removed the bobbin case to clean it? If so, it probably needs to be reseated. Remove the bobbin. Take out the case and reinsert it. If you can't get the bobbin out easily, there is probably thread clotted up somewhere under the feed dogs. I usually gently rock the handwheel back and forth as I brush the bobbin case area to begin dislodging the "clot." It also helps to remove the throat plate so you have a better view of the mechanics under the feed dogs. You'd be surprised at all the goop that can be caught but you can't see. If you do find a thread clot, use a machine brush and tweezer to gently remove each thread bit. I really hope this helps you. If it does, please come back to Fixya and rate my advice. Thanks!

Have a janome master craft 3000, just bought it used yesterday. Was sewing fine then all of a sudden it would stop pushing the material through like the needle was dull or something. Now it's doing it...

First do a process of elemination. Unthread the machine, both top and bottom, take out the needle. Place a piece of fabric under the pressure foot, lower the pressure, and depress the foot control. Does the fabric feed? If it does, then put in a NEW needle, thread up the machine, and see what happens. A dull needle won't prevent the fabric from feeding. If the fabric does not feed with no thread, then you have a pressure foot pressure problem, or a feed dog height problem, or a feed step motor problem, or possibly a board problem. If it only has a problem when you thread it up, then maybe you have a burr on the needle plate and the thread is hanging up on it and preventing the fabric from feeding. Check for all of these and if you still need assistance respond back.
