The stitching looks like the bobbin is upside down; that is what my 25 year old singer looked like when bobbin was upside down.

SOURCE: thread on bottom, bobbin thread loose

Sounds as though you've misthreaded the upper tension. The best way to verify this would be to thread your machine, lower the presser foot on to the material. Now try pulling the thread through the needle. (Assuming your upper tension dial is set to a number greater than one). You should feel resistance. Should you not feel resistance, rethread your upper tension.

SOURCE: my bobbin straight stitch is wavy and loose and

If you have any spare bobbin holders, I suggest you exchange it with the troublesome one and see if you get better results, Some times the bobbin /holder gets worn and no adjustment will correct it, therefore, you need to replace it. Or, could be that the timing (syncronization) of the upper and lower movements have changed and need to be realigned (not all models allow you to do this realignment syncronizing). Why stitches on top are great but bottom are loose and loopy?

Check your upper threading. Make sure it's between your tension discs. Remember loops on bottom, something is wrong with upper threading/tension. Loops on top something is wrong in the bobbin area (like the bobbin being in upside down or a loose bobbin tension spring)

start by rethreading the top thread with the presser foot UP.

My old Singer sewing machine won't pick up the bobbin thread. It is threaded properly and goes down to pick up the bobbin thread, but comes up with no bobbin thread. What to do please?

Hi, try re-timing the machine. Select "straight stitch," then take the bottom off the machine to see underneath the bobbin case area. Open the faceplate and look for two marks on the needle bar around where it enters the machine. Take out the bobbin case to see the hook. Turn the balance wheel toward you so the needle is going down. Stop turning when the needle is just about to start on its way up. The bottom mark on the needle bar should be just about to enter the machine, and the point of the hook should be just above the eye of the needle. If it isn't, tilt the machine backward and loosen the two screws on the vertical gear so you can move the hook to where it should be. Tighten the screws and put everything back so you can test your setup. If it sews a straight stitch correctly, try it on zigzag wide stitch. If it misses one side, repeat the timing process.

Singer machine 221(an old one made in 1935) worked perfectly. I decided to oil it. I took off the throat plate, took out the bobbin, cleaned and oiled..now the needle hits on the bobbin case and will not...

If you look at the bobbin area with the bobbin case out you will notice a finger that will be swinging around and will settle at bottom when the machine is setting on a table. This finger needs to be pointing straight up at the 12 o'clock position, in the slot in the bottom of the stitch plate. When you remove the plate, it swings down and you may not notice. Lift the plate and fit the finger into the slot between the two bumpers on the bottom of the plate and I'll bet it will sew again.

Singer sewing machine bobbin thread knots rather than forming stitches or forms large loose stiches on bottom of fabric

What you have going on is a bobbin problem. The knots are referred to as birds' nests and happen when your bobbin thread gets caught on a piece of the bobbin casing. The large, loose stitches are normally caused by a problem with the bobbin case, a bobbin that is would properly, or when you're getting to the end of the bobbin's thread and the thread is loosely would on the bobbin at that point.

You're best bet is probably to buy a new bobbin casing. They're usually about $25 or so and you should be able to find one on eBay by searching for Singer (your machine name and model) under the Crafts category. The silver plate on top of the area covering where you place your bobbin into has screws you need to carefully remove (careful not to loose them!). If you need to, take pictures with your cellphone or digital camera as you remove the old bobbin casing so you can see how to put the new one in.

This should take care of the problem. If, for some reason it doesn't, you may well have a problem ALSO with your bobbin tension, and that should be looked at by a Singer Technician. You can find one in the yellow pages near you or probably by searching Yahoo Local. Happy Sewing.

I make flannel square quilts for babies, it is a nightmare itself. It makes a lot of lint in the bobbin case and under the face plate, try prewashing the fabric before using it and clean out the bobbin case frequently while sewing. When i dont prewash it, i just open the bobbin area and blow the cotton dust out with my breath or i use the small brush to clean it out

Inserting needle on old singer machine

Hi Terry--

If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.

Singer Inspiration 4205... doesn't work!

Check the position of the bottom piece that holds the bobbin carrier to the left so it rides smoothly on the rotating hook that carries the upper thread around the bobbin. I found my wife"s machine loose so the bobbin carrier was out of position and not riding on the ledge of the rotating part. loosen two screws and push it to the left and tighten.
If upper thread bunches below the material it needs more tension so it pulls back up through the material.
If the old singers were fords this is a yugo
(been fixing and adjusting her machines for years. ))
