No other way. You should have a remote control to select the inputs.
If you wish to buy its original remote control, contact the authorized service centre, or authorized dealer to your device brand. They can either give you a genuine remote control to your device, or can direct you, from where can you purchase a suitable one.
To select a proper universal remote control, you should know about the number of digits to its set-up codes. There are 3 digit, 4 digit, 5 digit, 2 digit and even single digit codes, to some brand devices. After confirming this, check the sites linked here. Both the sites have set-up code list and set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. Check which brand remote control has set-up code/s to your device brand, and buy that one according to availability.
Brand name of the remote control isn't a matter, but it should have set-up codes in its code list, to the device brand you have.
Please note: Every new universal remote control will have set-up code list, and set-up procedure along with its pack. Never accept a remote control, that hasn't both of this. For more details about the set-up codes, visit the site Check this site too. Universal remote controls are available at most of the electronic spare part selling shops.
Type in the "brand name only" of your device, in the search box [at the top right] of the display window and the Search will start at once as you type in, and will show you all the related posts. It will make surf easy.

It will not automatic default to hdmi when powered on, and the only thing connected is the hdmi, but i must select it how do i default the tv to hdmi

There is a button on your remote control to change the input method. You press the button to change it. Examples of input choices are AUX, Antenna 1 & 2, cable, tv, hdmi. Keep pressing the input button until you see a picture or find the HDMI choice. That should solve your problem.

One of two things are happening. Either you have the video cable connected to the wrong input on your tv and it needs to be switched or you are not choosing the right input signal choice to watch your dvd's.

If you are using rca jacks, you might have connected the video jack to an audio input. Try reversing them. If you are not using RCA jacks then you probably have chosen the wrong input method. Click through input choices on your remote until you get a picture and sound at the same time.

I recently moved, and when I had my cable TV set up, my 42" LCD had the green light indicator telling me that the television was on, but the screen was blank (no "snow" or input display) and...

Try changing your input choices until you get a picture. This usually means that the tv is on and functioning properly but the input method you have chosen is not the right one. what I mean by input choices are aux, cable, input one or two ect. check to see where the antenna is connected to your tv by which input method you are using on the back of the tv. Then change that input method to match by clicking the button on the remote that changes it.

Something happened with the sound. someone hit a button (unknown which one) on the remote and now there is no sound while watching cable. other devices hooked up to the tv sound just fine.

The sound settings in the sound set-up menu are different and saved for each input (video one, cable, etc.). Go to the sound set-up menu and select stereo and speakers on. Save settings if that choice is offered. You may have accidentally changed settings for one input to SAP or speakers off.

How do I get to the digital inputs using the remote???

your unit must have the input assinged on the receiver manually first this will then be the auto default setting for that input eg: dvd can be rca or hdmi when you set the receiver it auto defaults to you choice there fore you pick the input on the remote not the signal source most receivers will then default to the next possible input some receivers have an auto signal input selection mode good luck

Denon AVR-1403 receiver switched from digital to analogue.

There are three modes (Auto, DTM, and PCM) on the input mode switch, on the main unit, selected by repeatedly pressing the input mode switch.

However, if you have already depressed the Analog button in, on the main unit you have predetermined the mode as analog.

On the remote, the INPUT MODE switch combines toggles for 5 choices, [Auto, PCM, DTS, Analog,
Ext. input]

My guess is that either the input mode switch on the main unit and/or the remote are toggled to analog.
