Hi , I think your laptop brightness settings had been changed. So try this to increase and reduce the brightness , contrast. Select start-> control panel -> appearance & personalization -> display . There you will have options like Adjust brightness , Adjust resolution etc., on the left side of your window. You may adjust in this way.
You should be able to adjust the brightness by using your FN (function) key plus the corespomding brightness up or down key while holding down the fn key. If you can't locate the keys check your manual or go on line at mfr site and download one.
It will do him just fine and it has great reviews as well. My 7 yr old uses a laptop daily. So just let him have at it and before you know it. He will be a pro on that laptop.
You should be able to check the function keys (F1-F12) and one of them should have a little symbol, it will look like a sun (circle with lines radiating out from the circumference) and a little up arrow, it will probably be right next to one with the sun and a little down arrow. Press the "Fn" key (right next to the left windows key) and hold it down, then tap the "sun up" key. That will raise your brightness.
If you want to raise it permanently, go into the Power Control Options in the Control Panel and find the setting for screen brightness.
