I have six Meade ETS-LX 6" telescopes which are used in an introductory astronomy lab. I have upgraded the firmware and other files in three of the six and they are working fine. The other three do...

These scopes have many bugs in the firmware and are not a mature technology. Some people have issues and some do not.

About the only thing you can try is to reload the firmware using the SC CARD method. Contact Meade or read the manual to learn how to upgrade the firmware using an SD flash memory card.

Other than that the scopes will need to be returned to Meade for repair.

Meade repairs are now being done in Mexico. However they still have an office in Irvine, California.

I have a Meade telescope that is about 19 years old. I do not have the model#. The inside of the scope has a round silver & black circle that has dropped down so it is impossible to view anything. Can this...

Yes-- sounds like the secondary mirror-- fell off (inside).. This was originally attached to the back-side of the front corrector lens.

Here is an article about your problem---

Meade autostar hand unit fails after 2 seconds changed hand units

You damaged the circuits inside the hand controller-- unless you are an electronics whiz these cannot be repaired.

However you can find them for sale directly from Meade and on Ebay (used) usually for about $80.

Dropped a screw and is now unreachable

Hi,

Been there, done that a few times!

You need a telescoping, magnetic wand. It looks like a teacher's blackboard "pointer".
It pulls out to about 2 feet, and has a magnet at the end. Some styles have a magnetic that is hinged to the tip of the wand.

Available at:

1. Auto supply/Home Repair stores, for fishing screws out of engines, etc.

2. Anywhere that home canning supplies are sold. (Even some general supermarkets.) Here they are used for fishing metal canning lids out of boiling water.

3. Stationery, or Office Supply-type stores. Buy the actual telescopic pointer, and glue your own magnet to the end.

You didn't drop the screw into the guts of the machine, didya?!

Hope that helps,

Deborah

Need Telescope Repaired

Yes! The problems you've described are simple to remedy. Since your Dad made it, I'd think your motivation should be even stronger.

Try going to www.cloudynights.com for more detailed information. There's an ATM forum there (Amateur Telescope Makers). Those folks can and will help.
