Check the resolution of the screen. Depending on the screen size, there is a maximum resolution that your screen can handle and will look perfect at that resolution.

It says i need to adjust the screen settings but when I do it still doesnt work

Sounds like you lost your video driver .. when the happens you go into a default setting that is usually low resolution. If you can access your manufacturers web site no doubt they have an updated driver available

Screen shrunk and can't be changed?

It sounds like the display somehow simply got set to a different resolution. Open System Preferences / Displays and choose a resolution that satisfies you.

Everything on my screen is hugh. Changing the resolution, text size, zoom, Crtl and mouse wheel does not fix the problem. What will?

Sounds like your computer has lost its video drivers and is reverting to a standard VGA screen resolution. Reinstall the drivers for your video card. You should be able to get these from the Dell website or the installation CDs that came with the unit.

Everything you described is consistent with the graphics card or drivers not supporting that resolution. Verify you are using the latest drivers available from the Matrox Website.

Ok all is not lost, you need to find a friend with a good monitor that will tolerate higher refresh rates and higher resolution settings.
Try to get a hold of one that is either brand new or near new and is known to be able to tolerate the resolution you set.

LCD monitors are probably highly desired item in such situations.
