Assuming it's a vent on the microwave, there is a safety switch inside that activates the fan in the event of a fire or when the switch gets too hot. It would need to be accessed and changed if it won't shut off

Microwave off but light and fan stay on. Open door turns fan off but light stays on.

Try a reset, unplugging for 10 minutes and plug back in.
If this does not fix it, it has a bad wire, switch or circuit board and is not worth fixing unless you know a good, cheap repairman.

Microwave fan comes on when plugged in

Could be in one of the micro switches for the door or in the board. Most commonly one of the switches though.

What do I do when the vent won't turn off?

unplug it for 12 hours or more and try again. Failing that the button or circuit for it may be broken, also make sure nothing is blocking the vent or nothing in the vent assembly is damaged. if you are opening the microwave make sure you know what you are doing of get a pro to do it for you. get an estimate and compare that to the price of a new one. Especially if the microwave is old or cheap.

My maytag microwaves fan stays on, i broke the bottom latch and glued it back on, still stays on' help?

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, your symptoms ("my maytag microwaves fan stays on, i broke the bottom latch and glued it back on, still stays on'"), as well as the answers to these questions:

Which fan is it, the internal cooling fan, which comes on automatically whenever the unit is microwaving?

Or the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually?

GE microwave won't turn off

Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.

It sounds like two separate problems.

1. It sounds like your magnetron is overheating and then the thermostat trips, cutting the power until it turns off, then it closes to power it back up.

It's essential that the internal cooling fan (I don't mean the hood / vent / exhaust fan) is running to be sure the magnetron stays cool.

2. It also sounds like your vent / hood / exhaust thermostat is sticking or the triac on the circuit board is leaky, causing the vent fan to stay on.

But you may want to check the owner's manual. It is designed to stay on if the temperature of the stove top is above a certain level.

-.htmYou can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

-.htmPlease reply back here if you still need help.

-.htmWe're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Oh, it turns out the the microwave was over heated and the fan was cooling it. The fan will automatically turn on and stay on until your microwave reaches normal temp. just unplug your microwave and let it cool off. then plug it in and everything should be just fine.
