Sub Speaker giving intermittent loud crackling and sharp loud popping sounds even with main volume control turned off. Crackling sound can be reduced by turning sub volume control off.

It may be the control itself too. In time, these controls can get dust build up inside it. There are volume control spray cleaners available from Radio Shack or other electronic parts stores. The cheat on cleaning the control is to just rotate it from stop to stop as many times as it takes to clear the noise.

Troubleshooting Laptop Sound Problems - No Audio Output

Symptom:

Can't hear any sound out of my laptop.

Diagnosis & Solution:

If you can't get any sound out of your laptop, the most likely cause is the volume being turned down or muted. Newer laptops monitor the external sound control so when the volume is turned up or down manually, the volume control in the operating system tracks right along with it. But with some laptops, especially those with external dial volume controls rather than toggles, the volume dials are independent of the software volume control and can't be monitored in software. In this case, if the volume dial is turned down on the outside of the laptop, the sound is turned off and nothing can be done in the operating system to change that. The only way to get the sound back is to turn up the external volume dial control.

If you have checked the external volume control on the laptop and the standard laptop volume slider in the operating system (the little speaker icon in Windows system tray) & you still can't get any sound out of the laptop, then the next step would be to check for any other software volume controls. Depending on the software installed and what you are trying to do, there may still be multiple volume controls and mixer panels scattered about the operating system. If the wrong channel is muted or turned down all the way in one of these independent controls, the laptop will not produce sound.

Most of the time, the first sign most laptop users get that their audio isn't working is the absence of operating system sounds, like the Windows rush on start up, or chimes with e-mail activity. Of course, these sounds can be turned off by design as well, through the Sounds option in Windows Control Panel. So, before looking at hardware problems, make sure these sounds are not turned off.

If you try to play an audio CD and the media player shows that the song is progressing but you can't get any sound out of the laptop speakers, odds are that the volume is turned down or muted. But it could also be due to an onboard sound hardware failure. If you are confident the volume is turned on in all possible locations and you've checked Windows Device Manager for a report of a hardware failure, try listening through headphones. If the headphones work, the wiring to the internal speakers has broken or come loose. Wiring failure is only likely if the speakers are in the lid and therefore wired through the hinges.

If you don't get any sound out of the headphones & you haven't missed a "mute" being checked off somewhere in software controls, then it really is a hardware failure. If the problem is with all sounds, including Windows chimes, internet radio, etc, then the problem is that the integrated sound processor has failed. In this case, unless the sound system is on a daughter card, it means the fix would require replacing the motherboard. But if the only thing you can't do is play audio CD's, then the problem is that the output from the DVD/CD player is muted or not getting to the amplification stage.

In modern laptops the DVD/CD players feature Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) which means that music CDs can be read digitally & the data passed to the built-in sound card or an external sound card replacement for processing, amplification then output. If there's a problem with the DVD/CD connector or if the wiring has been damaged, the music CD may get spun around without the sound making it to the sound card. The DAE output chip rarely fails on the CD/DVD drive, but the connector can fail. Make sure that digital playback is enabled in the properties tab of the drive in Device Manager.

You can replace your built-in laptop sound card with a PC card, with a USB sound card or USB speakers. These replacements make good workarounds if the integrated audio system fails. They also bring with them a whole new level of software with more volume controls, which are integrated with the existing operating system software. When shopping for replacement sound cards, keep in mind that USB solutions are much cheaper than PC cards. Also, when purchasing USB speakers to replace the laptop's sound system, don't buy speakers advertised as "USB powered". The "USB powered" speakers only draw their power from the USB port, they still need to be plugged into a regular audio jack to output any sound.

Volume loss

Laptop or Desktop ?
Try swapping the speakers around to see if the problem is in the speaker itself.

Volume problems on computers often happen for a variety of reasons.

Volume troubleshooting, however, is one of the easiest problems to troubleshoot because there are only a few things that usually cause the problems.

Usually the problem isn't even an error but just merely an adjustment that needs to be made.

Test your speakers.

This is the first thing you should check if you can't hear anything coming out of your computer. First try turning up the volume know and make sure you are in fact turning the volume knob and not a tone or balance knob.

Make sure the speakers are completely plugged in to the wall and the computer. Test with another set of speakers or headphones after you have done this.

Check the computer volume level.

On the taskbar is a volume icon, which usually looks like a small speaker.

Click on the icon and turn the volume up.

Make sure it has not been muted.

Double clicking on the icon will bring up a panel of several volume controls.

Try turning up the volume on each slider.

Go to Control Panel and choose "Sounds and Audio Devices."

Under the volume tab, click speaker volume and turn up the level if needed.

Turn up the application volume. Most programs that use sound have an additional volume control just for that program.

Find the volume control and turn it up.

Usually it is located in the lower right or left corner on the program, but you may have to search for it.

Troubleshoot the sound card.

Download the latest drivers from your sound card manufacturer's website.

Go to Control panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. Click on "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."

Click on your sound card, select the driver tab and then click on "Update Driver."

Point to the file where you saved the latest drivers from the website.

After this, restart your computer.

The speaker plug/outlets is usually at the back of the computer or if its a laptop on the side

you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make

sure the connection is good with no dust as dust causes static electricity

clean your computer of dust using a can of compressed air or fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is

no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit

dust causes static to build up in a computer

If this doesn't solve your problem, try reseating the sound card into your computer.

Hope this helps

HDD volume low or the Sound volume HDD:- Consider un-installing un-wanted programmes and deleting all information you no longer wish to have or consider buying a larger storage device.
Sound Volume in your control panel depending on which OS you have go to sounds and turning the volume up if your not sure where this is you can always go to the task bar on the bottom right and side of your screen and right clicking the volume icon there is a volume control panel turning this up will increase the volume of your computer

Acertravelmate4000 got it used, don,t know how to turn off mute, turn on or up volume

The volume may be muted. In Windows, look at the volume
control (speaker) icon on the taskbar. If it is crossed-out, click on
the icon and deselect the Mute option.
The speakers may be turned off. Press Fn-F8 to turn the speakers
on (this hot key also turns the speakers off).
The volume level may be too low. In Windows, look at the volume
control icon on the taskbar.
Fn-? Volume up Increases the sound volume. Fn-? Volume down Decreases the sound volume.

If this helps u let me know

Volume

you might want to look into one of two options... either an external sound card, or a keyboard that has mltimedia buttons on it.

If you go with the former, the Audigy 2 NX external sound card might be want you are looking for. It's small and has volume controls right on the top. Granted, it is overkill if you just want simple volume control. However, if you don't have a high-end sound card already, it could be a nice addition to your desk..?
