How to fix a rusty earphone tip/chipped earphone tip?

My earphone sound is scratchy and I have to rotate it ever so often to get the perfect sound. This is because either the tip of the plug is chipped, or it is just rust. If you look at the picture, is it rusted or chipped? How can I fix it? http://i.imgur.com/8tqRe9U.jpg Here's a pic. The orange part on the tip is either chipped or rusty. How can I fix it? I'll only buy a new pair if I need to, but I see a chance of fixing this pair of earphones. Also, the brand of earphones I am using is Panasonic.

Your picture doesn't look either rusty or chipped. You could clean the plug with a "magic eraser", but it's more likely that the wire itself has become damaged, and will need a new plug installed by shortening the wire a few inches. The plugs are quite inexpensive, and available at any electronics store.

Testimonial: "I already tried cleaning the plug with a napkin drenched with some soap and water; it didn't work. Also, I have no clue on replacing the plug with a new one."

"magic eraser" is slightly abrasive. Soap/water on a napkin won't clean possiblr corrosion off. Magic Eraser will.

The sound is coming out perfectly in the right earphone but it is barely coming out in the left earphone

Then you need to adjust the earphones plug in, adjust it gently and it will sound right on both earphone. It is the plug that is causing the problem. Adjusting it will solve the problem for you.

Scratchy radio volume dial

Use an electronic contact cleaner. You need to shoot it inside the pot through the openings. Then rotate many times. This will remove oxidation on the contacts inside. If you don't use a contact cleaner, turn of f the radio and rotate many times the potentiomer left-right-left-right ...When you turn it on again, you will see the scratcy sound will be reduced but it will come back eventually. The more often you rotate, the less noise it will make. This is a very common problem, nothing to worry about.

Common problem with mp3 players, not just iRiver. Unless you are unusually careful with them - as in, sit still and don't move, this is something you can expect going forward. If you are experiencing the -sound out of only one earphone problem- then the mp3 player itself is faulty and needs to be replaced. If it just sounds scratchy, then sit still and don't move. Sad, but true. 3 times in 4 months is a bit excessive.
